welcome to the journalism department
The SCSU Journalism Department offers an array of courses taught by full-time faculty who are veteran journalists, as well as part-time faculty currently working in the field.
Journalism majors usually begin the sequence of writing courses needed to fulfill their graduation requirements by taking JRN 200 - Basics of Journalism. This usually begins after the student has completed the prerequisite for the course, ENG 112.
Students start their technology courses with JRN 135 - Digital Media Skills, which introduces them to the various tools and skills needed to work in new media, broadcast and photography.
Students can get an introduction to the broad topic of journalism and the First Amendment by taking JRN 101 -The Media: Freedom & Power. JRN 101 and JRN 135 are requirements for Journalism majors, and options for non-majors in the Liberal Education Program.
We offer Bachelor of Arts, and Bachelor of Science degrees. Either degree provides the liberal arts background necessary for careers in news media and allied fields, such as business and public service, and for law school or other related graduate programs. Students receive an education using up-to-date technological software and equipment.
We also encourage students to participate in a variety of student media organizations.
The department also awards annual scholarships to students. To apply for the 2016-17 scholarships, use this online application form. The deadline to apply is Dec. 15, 2015.
