Scholarships

The Journalism Department offers scholarships to students each  year.

The deadline for application for the 2014-15 scholarships is Dec. 9, 2013.

Interviews with scholarship candidates will take place in the Spring.

To apply: Each scholarship has a unique application form. Click on the link under the scholarship heading to download the correct form. The links download Word documents named for each individual scholarship. Open the file in Microsoft Word, and fill in the form. You may write your essay in the same document with the application form. Save the file and e-mail the new file to Professor Harris. 

Eligible students may apply for more than one scholarship.

The Charles S. and Eugenia M. Whitney Scholarship

The scholarship is awarded annually based on interest accrued on the endowment. To be considered, students must meet the following criteria:

Robin Marshall Glassman Scholarship

Robin Marshall Glassman founded the Journalism Department at Southern Connecticut State University in 1979. She is a past president for the Connecticut Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and a 1989 recipient of the national SPJ Distinguished Teacher of Journalism award. She worked as a reporter, managing editor, writing coach, news service correspondent and film, TV and magazine writer over her 50-year career.

Richard P. Leddy Scholarship

Southern graduated Richard P. Leddy (1971) served nearly four decades as Southern's sports information director, beginning first as a student in 1969 and continuing until his retirement in 2007. 

The scholarship may be awarded annually to the recipient(s) provided satisfactory academic performance is maintained and provided all criteria specified continues to be met.

Esther R. Smith Scholarship

The Esther R. Smith Scholarship in Journalism was initiated by Smith's daughter, Marcia Smith Glasper, a 1984 SCSU journalism graduate and director of Southern's Diversity & Equity Programs. For Smith Glasper, journalism was a foundation for her career in public relations and her present position as director of Diversity & Equity Affairs. She and her sisters hope the funds from the scholarship will assist recipients in completing their college education.
