"Cartographies of Struggle:  Arab Feminist Resistance" with Dr. Laila Farah

Laila Farah"This lecture explores Middle Eastern women's lives and how these women have been represented in the media outside of the Middle East, by Arab women scholars, and 'Third World' feminists. For centuries, Arab women have been depicted in various disparaging ways from the exotic harem girl, to the rock thrower in the Intifada, to the submissive victims of Arab patriarchy. Similarly, women from the region are always assumed to be doubly repressed by Islam as well.  I challenge these representations by focusing on resistance in the everyday lives of Arab women through critiquing media depictions, personal narratives of Arab women and their involvement in recent political uprisings." - Dr. Laila Farah
