Southern's Master of Library Science program has been accredited by the American Library Association since 1972.
The program is scheduled for a comprehensive accreditation program review in the spring of 2013. This site has been created to facilitate access to our program presentation for our students and alumni and their employers, and other constituents as well as the public at large.
Preparation for the comprehensive review is approximately a 24-month process. Pre-planning began in fall 2010 with a Plan for the 2013 Program Presentation; surveys and a followup workshop with constituents to create a shared vision.
The External Review Panel (ERP) appointed by the American Library Association (ALA)'s Office of Accreditation will be on campus Monday and Tuesday, April 8 and 9, 2013, to meet with faculty, students, constituents in the community, and administration; and to review documents that are housed on-campus only.
The ERP chair is Elizabeth Aversa, Ph.D., University of Alabama. Dr. Aversa has been director of the library and information science schools at University of Alabama, University of Tennessee, and Catholic University. She has also been a faculty member at University of Maryland and Drexel University. Dr. Aversa has been a practicing librarian and has additional professional experience at the Institute for Scientific Information, State Library of Pennsylvania, and the Maryland State Department of Education. She brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the comprehensive review of our Master of Library Science program.
The remaining members are: Richard AmRhein, CIO, Valparaiso University; Gail Dickinson, Associate Professor, Old Dominion University; Donna Dziedzic, Executive Director (retired), Naperville (IL) Public Library; June Lester, Professor Emerita, University of Oklahoma; and Mary Elizabeth (Ma'lis) Wendt, Associate Director (retired), New York Public Library.
