UTILIZING INSTRUCTIONAL MEDIA

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Workshop in the effective use of computer based instructional media including the planning, selection and production of materials. Prerequisite: basic computer skills or permission of instructor. Scheduled fall and spring semesters. 3 credits.

COURSE OBJECTIVES/STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

• Demonstrate their ability to follow the basic steps involved in systematic planning for the use of instructional media - ASSURE model.
• Identify and describe the current state of technology for instructional media.
• Demonstrate satisfactory skills in producing multiple modes of instructional media.
• Produce quality instruction.
• Demonstrate group-process skills to work productively in an instructional design team.

   I.     Unit 1: Introduction to Instructional Technology

   II.    Unit 2: Systematic Planning for Media Use -- ASSURE Model   

   III.   Unit 3: Digital Image Creation/Manipulation -- Image Composer and Others 

   IV.    Unit 4: Digital Sound Creation/Manipulation -- Sound Forge XP and Others

   V.     Unit 5: Developing Self-Running Multimedia Presentations -- PowerPoint

   VI.     Unit 6: Individual Practices or Assignments in the Computer Lab

   VII.   Unit 7: Publishing Documents on the Web I -- HTML Coding

   VIII.  Unit 8: Publishing Documents on the Web II -- HTML Coding

   IX.    Unit 9: Developing Online Tutorials - ViewletBuilder5

   X.     Unit 10: Individual Practices or Assignments in the Computer Lab

   XI.    Unit 11: Survey of Conventional Instructional Media & Wrap-up

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

1.     Team Project: 500 pts. -- 50%

╖     Final (revised) documentation including Formative Evaluation: 150 pts.
╖     Instructional Media/Materials: 120 pts.
╖     Team Presentation: 50 pts.
2.     Individual Assignments: 500 pts. -- 50%
╖     Individual Assignment I -- Multimedia PowerPoint Presentation: 150 pts.
╖     Individual Assignment II -- Development of Web Page: 150 pts.
╖     Individual Assignment III -- Development of Online Tutorial: 150 pts
╖     Class Attendance/Participation/Contribution: 50 pts.
