About the College

The College of Health and Human Services accomplishes our educational mission through interdisciplinary education, practice-based learning, and student access to outstanding faculty educators. Our faculty and students partner with our community to achieve health and human service priorities and meet current workforce needs. Our college provides bachelor's, master's, and/or doctoral degree programs in the following disciplines:

Career Focused

Our disciplines prepare our students to be competent and creative practitioners ready to meet the current and future health and human service needs of our society. We continuously develop and strengthen partnerships with area employers in healthcare, social services, public health, education, community recreation, and sport management. We also monitor workforce needs and consistently update our educational programs to ensure that our graduates are top candidates for competitive employment opportunities and equipped to have impactful, meaningful, and rewarding careers.

Uniquely Interprofessional

Our College of Health intentionally brings multiple discipline together under one umbrella. This allows our profession to work together for educational, research, and service purposes. To facilitate this important work, our college hosts multiple institutes, centers, and clinics. These include the Institute for Adaptive Sport and Recreation, Institute for Interprofessional Education, Family Therapy Clinic, Center for Communication Disorders, and Running Injury Clinic. In partnership with the Yale School of Public Health, we also co-house the Community Alliance for Research and Engagement (CARE); this community-based research center is currently working on a 3.5-million-dollar grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to collaborate with New Haven neighborhoods on Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH).

Practice-based

All degree programs in our college provide students with extensive opportunities for hands-on learning. For example, at our on-site Center for Communication Disorders, graduate students in our speech-language pathology program collaborate with professional clinic staff to provide services to more than 150 clients per week. Beyond our clinics, our institutes and centers offer many opportunities for our students to gain hands-on experience through service with individuals and communities. Additionally, each of our programs provides our students with internship, field experience, and clinical placement opportunities. Our nursing program places our BS, MS, and Ed.D. students in up to 1,000 different settings each year across 100 different agencies in our region. Overall, our college’s range of internship, clinical, and field placements ensure that our students bring positive change to a range of clients while earning their degrees.
