Careers in Accounting
Who needs accountants? Everyone! All government agencies, private companies, profit organizations, and non-profit organizations employ accountants. Accounting is an information system that provides reports to various stakeholders about the economic activities and financial condition of the business. Just like other social sciences, accounting is largely a product of its environment. The social, economic, political, and legal environment that influences accounting is constantly changing; as a result the objectives and practices of accounting are also changing.
As the economic entities grow in size and complexities, so do the responsibilities placed on the accountants and the profession. There is a distinction between private and public accountants. Private accountants are employed by a business firm, non-profit organization, or government agency; they are full- or part-time employees of the organization. Public accountants and their staff provide services on a fee basis to a business firm, non-profit organization, or government agency. Most accountants are professionally certified, e.g., Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), and Certified Internal Auditor (CIA).
