             FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the SCSU Faculty and Staff Campaign for Student Excellence?
The SCSU Faculty & Staff Campaign for Student Excellence is the most popular way that Southern employees support the University and its students. Gifts made to this Campaign provide "budget relieving" support to some of the most important areas on campus including scholarships, academic department support, athletic programs, and student activities.

Is this the same as the United Way Campaign or the CT State Employees' Campaign?
No.  While both the CT State Employees' Campaign and the United Way Campaign are very worthwhile causes, this campaign is different.  This campaign is managed by the SCSU Development office and SCSU Foundation, Inc. with the assistance of a committee of SCSU employees.  All gifts made to this campaign go towards supporting the students and programs of Southern Connecticut State University.

Why is annual giving so important?
Making an annual gift every year makes a statement to corporations, foundations and college ranking publications that you believe in Southern's mission and support the educational experience that it provides. Your annual gift provides vital support that means the difference between simply maintaining University standards and reaching for higher academic excellence.

How can I give?
You can make a gift to Southern in many ways, including a one-time gift by check or credit card, an online gift at giving.southernct.edu, a pledge through payroll deduction, or a planned gift.

Can I designate my gift to something specific on campus?
Yes, you are the one to decide which fund(s) your gift is assigned to.  Although the University prefers to receive unrestricted gifts that can be applied to the most pressing budgetary needs, some donors prefer to specify the use of their gift. There are a number of areas to which you can designate your gift, including any School fund, any athletic team, the library, and many scholarships.  For a list of scholarships, please visit http://www.southernct.edu/alumni/scholarshipprogram/availablescholarships/

Wherever you designate your gift, you can be assured that 100% of your gift goes directly to that fund.

Can my "small" gift really make any impact?
Gifts of any size make an impact. Your participation alone makes a big impact; you are showing your support for Southern, its mission, and its students to the New Haven community and to corporations and foundations that want to invest in Southern.  Collectively all gifts make a huge impact.  If every Southern employee gave just $1 per paycheck, Southern would have $26,000 to spend on its students needs.  At $3 per paycheck, Southern would have $78,000 and at $5 per paycheck, Southern would have over $130,000. The math shows that one "small" gift does make a huge impact.  To see the impact of a "small" biweekly gift, visit the payroll deduction table

What are the tax benefits of giving to Southern?
All gifts to the University through the Annual Giving program are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law. The SCSU Foundation is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c) 3 tax-exempt organization. The University issues gift receipts for each gift.  There are additional tax benefits to making gifts of appreciated stock or setting up annuities and trusts with Southern.
