Dear Prospective Athletic Training Student:

Welcome to Southern Connecticut State University's Athletic Training Education Program Web site! It is an exciting time as we have had several changes and upgrades to our program. First, we have recently received final approval from the Connecticut Department of Higher Education as a full degree program. Beginning this year, all students completing our program will be awarded with a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training. Second while awaiting final approval of the degree, we underwent yet another successful accreditation review by CAATE, the nationally recognized accrediting body for athletic training education. This review was the fourth successful evaluation by an accrediting body, the most of any Connecticut institution.

In addition, the university has made significant investments in our program. This past summer we were able to acquire several pieces of equipment that will enhance our course and clinical instruction. We are one of the few programs in the region to possess a complete traction system, a laser and a shortwave diathermy. We have purchased equipment to facilitate instruction of emergency medical care and assessment of general medical issues. We have added to our wide array of materials to teach orthopedic assessment and rehabilitation.

Our curriculum extends over the student's entire four years and is designed to constantly reinforce the skills and techniques of the athletic trainer. Many of the courses have laboratory components and are taught by the same people who provide athletic injury care to our varsity athletes. At Southern, you learn from practitioners who have a over 50 years of combined and continuing clinical experience, one of the highest in New England . Clinically, we offer outstanding opportunities for direct hands-on learning with collegiate athletes in one of the top Division II athletic programs in the Northeast and at several off-campus sites. We expect our students to demonstrate their skills outside of the classroom, in a real working environment and we provide the opportunity to do it.

Of course any measure of an academic program is the success of its students. In our more than 17 years as an accredited program, we have placed students across the United States with most in our own Connecticut . Several students have gone on to graduate studies on full graduate assistantships to as far  west as the University of Hawaii , to as far south as the University of Florida and LSU, to as far north as Minnesota State-Mankato and all along the east coast. Our students have won several national, regional and state athletic training scholarships.

The main emphasis of our program is to develop strong clinicians, athletic trainers who know what to do and have experience doing it. We emphasize critical thinking, a well-rounded knowledge base and direct hands-on learning. If you are looking for a dynamic and challenging athletic training experience, please consider Southern's Athletic Training Education Program.
