admission requirements
Students entering SCSU as freshmen will become involved in the clinical and academic aspects of the program during their very first semester. However, students will formally apply for admission into the Exercise Science Department and the Athletic Training Education Program at the end of the freshman year (second week of May).
It is important to remember that students wishing to apply for admission into the Exercise Science Department/Athletic Training Education Program must:
- Have completed or be enrolled in the following prerequisite course work:
EXS 184 - Introduction to Athletic Injury Care and Prevention
EXS 185 - Concepts and Practices of Athletic Training
EXS 281 - Anatomy and Physiology I
- Be an officially matriculated student at SCSU
- Have accrued a 2.5 overall Quality Point Ratio (QPR)
- Read and understand the Technical Standards form
- Complete an interview with ATEP faculty
- Accrue 100+ hours of observation in the athletic training room.
- Receive a C- or better in all major course work
- Submit three letters of recommendation and an up-to-date transcript
- Successfully complete oral/practical and written examinations
- Submit a portfolio
An applicant's admission into the Athletic Training Education Program will be deferred or denied if one or more of the requirements for admission are not met. If admission is deferred, the applicant will be set aside until the following spring.
transfer students
Students who wish to transfer into Southern's Athletic Training Education Program from another institution or another SCSU academic major must contact or meet with the Athletic Training Education Program coordinator. Applications for admission into the Athletic Training Education Program are accepted by the second week of May of each year. If you wish to transfer into Southern's Athletic Training Education Program, it is highly recommended that you do so in the fall semester and have completed EXS 281 (Anatomy & Physiology I) or another equivalent anatomy course. Also, you must submit an official transcript to our Admissions Office for evaluation as soon as possible. Once the Admissions Office has assessed your transcripts, it will provide you with a Transfers Evaluation Form, which applies your previously earned credits to courses offered at Southern.
We will make every attempt to accommodate you, but you will be required to complete our program in course sequence. Please do not assume that all classes will transfer, or that all credit will be accepted. Also, please note that clinical hours accrued prior to your transfer cannot be applied to our program requirements.
