Introducing the Owl Choice Card

Student Account Refunds through the Owl Choice Card

Southern Connecticut State University is launching a new way for students to receive their student account refunds, through the Owl Choice Card from Higher OneŽ. Southern has partnered with Higher One, Inc., a financial services company focused solely on higher education to bring this new method of refund disbursement to campus. Through Higher One, Southern students will continue to have efficient, convenient and secure options for receiving their Financial Aid or school refunds.


The new Owl Choice Card will provide Southern students with increased choice, including:

  • A same day deposit to the OneAccount, an FDIC Insured, no minimum balance checking account
  • Transfer to another banking account
  • Check payment mailed to student

Owl Choice Card Debit MasterCardMost* matriculated students (including undergraduate and graduate, as well as full-time and part-time) will receive the Owl Choice Card DEBIT MasterCard. This card is required for selection of your refund preference, whether or not you select to activate your OneAccount.

As a newly matriculated student you will receive your Owl Choice Card in the mail soon after you registered for classes. Your Owl Choice Card Debit MasterCard will be mailed to your current address on file with the University. You will receive an email notification from Higher One when your Owl Choice Card ships. If your card is shipped to an old address, simply notify the University Card Office and they can assist you in updating your address and getting a new card shipped to your current address.

To ensure you receive your refund as soon as possible, once you receive your Owl Choice Card log on to www.OwlChoiceCard.com and use your 16 digit Owl Choice Card number to activate your refund preference (be it the OneAccount, another bank account, or a paper check). Even if you do not receive financial aid, you may be eligible to receive a refund from Southern, for example if you drop a class during the add/drop period, or you withdraw, you may be eligible for a refund. It is important to keep your Owl Choice Card handy and never throw it away. Keep the card safe in case you need to access future refunds owed to you.

Once you activate your Owl Choice Card and select a refund preference, any subsequent address changes will need to be made both at the Southern Registrar's Office and through Higher One.

*Students who previously selected a direct deposit refund preference through eBill Payment Suite (eRefund) and received a refund during the past year will continue to receive their refunds through their existing refund preference defined in their eBill Payment Suite. These students will not receive an Owl Choice Card at this time.

NOTICE: The Owl Choice Card Debit MasterCard is NOT A CREDIT CARD. This card has the ability to function as a DEBIT CARD, if you elect to have a free OneAccount or other Higher One checking account. The Owl Choice Debit MasterCard can also function as an ATM card.
