BREAKING NEW GROUND
May 20, 2011

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy participated yesterday in a campus groundbreaking ceremony for the creation of a School of Business building, a facility that will give the school a place to call home.
The state Bond Commission recently approved granting the university $3.9 million for the renovation of the Old Student Center into a structure for the university's School of Business. It marked the final allocation needed for the $6.6 million project to begin. Previous allocations from the Bond Commission and the CSUS 2020 project also have contributed to the total budget package, which will cover costs for construction, equipment and other improvements.
A speaking program took place in a tent in front of the John Lyman Center for the Performing Arts, which is located near the site of the future School of Business. The ceremonial groundbreaking was held in front of the Old Student Center immediately following the speaking program.

In addition to Malloy, speakers included SCSU interim President Stanley F. Battle; Louise H. Feroe, acting chancellor of the Connecticut State University System; Mayor John DeStefano, Jr.; Elizabeth Womack, a senior finance major at Southern; Ellen D. Durnin, dean of the SCSU School of Business; and Richard J. Balducci, vice chairman of the CSUS Board of Trustees.
The building, which is estimated to take about a year to complete, will encompass about 23,000 square feet. It will house modern business faculty offices, classrooms, meeting rooms, workshop space, and a high-tech stock trading room, where students conduct research on the various market sectors, follow the market swings and implement a portfolio of investments.
The new facility will enable faculty to relocate from the dilapidated Seabury Hall. Seabury, a former dormitory, was built in 1956 and is scheduled to be demolished after the renovations are completed.
As of last fall, the School of Business included a total of 1,266 students - undergraduate and graduate. The school offers a business major with concentrations in accounting, business economics, finance, international business, management, management of information systems, and marketing, leading to the Bachelor of Science degree in business administration. The program builds a strong foundation in liberal arts and offers an in-depth knowledge in a particular business area. The Business Administration Program prepares students both for graduate study in economics, business administration, or law and for entry-level professional positions in business, industry, and government.
A
Bachelor of Arts degree with major in economics may be earned through
the Department of Economics in the School of Business. Applicants are
encouraged to contact the Department of Economics directly for specific
details.
In addition, the School of Business offers the M.B.A. degree in business
administration. The program is multidisciplinary and follows a
systems-approach to understanding the internal and external forces that
influence the development of an organization. The program is also
designed for students with professional experience who are seeking to
enhance their administrative skills and to grow within their
organizations without interruption to their career.
The School of Business is organized into five academic departments:
Accounting, Economics & Finance, Management and Management
Information Systems, Marketing, and Master of Business Administration
Program. To learn more about the School of Business, visit www.SouthernCT.edu/business.
