The President's Climate Commitment

In 2007, President Cheryl Norton signed the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment (PCC) on behalf of the entire SCSU community and committed Southern to achieving climate neutrality -- zero net greenhouse gas emissions -- by 2050 or sooner. To date, over 600 colleges and universities in the United States have signed the PCC and joined this unified and collaborative national effort in higher education to be leaders in sustainability and climate change solutions.

As part of the PCC, the university has developed a Climate Action Plan to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. The plan was submitted to the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) in December 2009.

While achieving climate neutrality involves a monumental set of tasks, the university has made a strong start toward this goal.

In a collaborative effort with Eastern Connecticut State University's Institute for Sustainable Energy, Southern has developed an on-going Climate Action Plan to become a carbon neutral campus. To meet obligations of the PCC, signatories develop institutional action plans within two years of signing. The Climate Action Plan (CAP) will include a report on Southern's greenhouse gas emissions, plans to mitigate these emissions, and ways to incorporate sustainability into curriculum, research, campus life, and community outreach efforts.
