Recycling heavy metals is especially important because in addition to keeping them out of landfills (where they would eventually leach into soil and water) recycling reduces the environmental impacts caused by mining virgin ore.

• Online training for personnel handling hazardous wastes meets Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) standards.
• All cleaning products have been evaluated and many replaced with green or less hazardous materials.
• Campus mercury removal: Replacement of mercury-containing instruments with new ones which are mercury free.  Southern recycles fluorescent bulbs so that the mercury in them can be reused.
