CAREER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS 

The Center for Career Services offers many innovative programs designed to help students connect with their future. We invite all students to visit the Center for Career Services where a professional staff member will guide and facilitate  the many processes required for favorable career planning. Utilization of the following in-house programs is encouraged:

Discover - A web based assessment tool that can help you find out in depth information about careers and majors that suit your interests and skills

Perfect Interview - An innovative multimedia software program that allows you to create a personalized interview session choosing from 1500 interview questions with available answers and recording capability, a playback option and the ability to store your interview for future critiquing  and assessment

Resumania - A program designed that allows students to stop by the Center  for a quick review of their resume  by a Career Services professional staff member

Vault - A comprehensive online tool for your career related needs consisting of: Free Downloadable Career Guides, Industry Search, Occupational Profiles, Career Advice Articles, Company Profiles, and Salary Information

 

CAREER COUNSELING 

Individual consultation regarding career options, resume writing, cover letters, job search strategies, interviewing skills and dressing for success is available from the professional staff.

 

CAREER PLANNING INFORMATIONAL PACKET  

The Center for Career Services provides students with an informational packet to assist them with all aspects of career planning. The packet includes a Strategies for Success Guide with  resume samples, a cover letter outline , four year career plan, job search strategies, and interviewing techniques. There are specific  packets designed to meet the needs of our students:  Business, Education, Diversity, Liberal Arts, Science and Technology.

 

CAREER RESOURCE LIBRARY 

An extensive library of resources is available in the Center for Career Services. These resources include reference books, video and multi media tools on many aspects of career planning, featured articles of interest, the National Association of Colleges and Employees (NACE) salary handbook, graduate school information, a job bank, and an entrepreneurial area. This is a walk in service. Appointments are not required.

 

CAREER RESOURCE COMPUTER LAB 

A comprehensive computer lab is available to all students for resume and cover letter creation, career information, company information, and job search via the Internet. Resume samples ease the process of creating many types of resumes. Students also have access to company/organization information, as well as to thousands of jobs, both national and international. Appointments are not required.

 

COOPERATIVE EDUCATION

Cooperative Education is an educational program that integrates academic study with related professional experience. Co-op students have the opportunity to earn money and academic credit for their work, while gaining valuable professional experience. 

 

WORKSHOPS

A full schedule of workshops on resume writing, interviewing techniques, choosing a major,  preparing for a successful career fair experience and job search strategies round out the range of services offered to career and job seekers. Workshops are presented by the Center's professional staff, as well as by representatives from the employment community.

 

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

The Center for Career Services offers extensive job listings for all SCSU students and alumni. Our mission is to connect students with their future by assisting with all aspects of job search strategies. Whether the student is looking for experience through cooperative education, full-time or part-time employment, or just some advice, the Center for Career Services can help!!

 

OFF-CAMPUS RECRUITMENT PROGRAMS

Full-time, part-time, and co-op opportunities are available to students through the Center for Career Services. In addition, graduates should be aware that national and regional employers representing all fields actively recruit Southern students. Students may interview with employers during our On Campus Interviewing Program or at the employer's site. Students and alumni are encouraged to register with Career Services and participate in the recruitment programs.

 

ON-CAMPUS INTERVIEWS

The Center offers graduating seniors and alumni a direct way to compete for job opportunities through the on-campus interview program. Employers come to campus to interview candidates for positions in a variety of fields. Students who are interested in participating in the on-campus interview program should visit the Center to view the schedule and determine which companies they wish to interview with. Previous companies have included: Aetna, Department of Defense, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Internal Revenue Service,  PriceWaterhouseCoopers,  Public School systems, Sherwin Williams,  Social Security Administration. Some employers offer informational sessions prior to the on-campus interviews. ON CAMPUS STUDENT EMPLOYMENT

Each year hundreds of students work on-campus. Southern's on-campus jobs offer students extra cash and the opportunity to develop the skills and work habits necessary to be successful after graduation. The University Student Worker Program  is open to all matriculated students and is available throughout campus.  Students actively looking for part-time on-campus employment must register with the Center.

 

PART-TIME EMPLOYMENT

Many employers contact the Center seeking students interested in part-time and seasonal employment. Visit the Center to search for the position that meets your employment needs.

 

SPEAKERS BUREAU 

Speakers from various businesses and organizations share with students information about their career field, occupation, industry, and career opportunities. This is a valuable source of career information that will help students formulate their career goals. Previous speakers have included Aetna, Enterprise-Rent-A-Car, Internal Revenue Service, Social Security Administration, and Waterbury Public School System.

 

CAREER FAIR 

Each fall and spring semester, the Center for Career Services hosts a Career Fair that attracts national and regional employers representing all fields to the Southern campus. The fairs foster student and employer interaction while offering the opportunity to explore career fields, learn about organizations and industries, and investigate cooperative education and full-time or part-time job opportunities.
