THE GENDER GAP: WHY DO GIRLS GET TURNED OFF TO TECHNOLOGY?

By Susan Williams

In the past, educators and parents have had concerns that girls, in comparison to boys, are being left behind in Science and Math. They score lower than boys on standardized tests in these subjects. Efforts by educators have begun to bridge these gaps. However, there’s a whole new field to contend with: THE DIGITAL DIVIDE!

In David Gordon’s book, The Digital Classroom, research has shown that girls lose interest in computers because of the lack of gender privy software. Girls prefer games that require strategy and skill with life-like characters with whom they could relate. Boys, on the other hand, like games that progress very quickly and are violent.

In order to close the gender divide and create equity in technology, motivational software must be created.
