Society of Physics Enthusiasts Minutes

In attendance: Dr. Enjalran, Jackie McGuinness, Jay James, James Elliott, William Jensen, Tom Sadowski, Michael Prentice and Nick Marridis

 

The meeting was called to order at 1:00 pm.

 

I.                    Old Business

a.       Minutes from previous meeting were distributed to everyone in attendance—no questions or comments.

b.      Officers chosen to attend the Dean's Committee Meeting on Monday (18^th) Jay and Tom to attend.

c.       Open House Report from Jay

                                                               i.      Great interest in the Physics Department booth: Charles, Jay and Jenn participated. Approx. 20 prospective students interested in SCSU Physics.

                                                             ii.      Booth was awarded “Honorable Mention.”

d.      Fundraiser Idea Report from James

                                                               i.      Student Affairs has given permission to putting up the arcade game, possibly in the Student Center.

                                                             ii.      Must get game ready if we want to have it placed on campus soon.

 

II.                 New Business

a.       Prospective Open House for SCSU Physics Department

                                                               i.      Tentative Date: Sunday, November 21^st

                                                             ii.      Invite current freshmen and also students that attended Open House to meet with students & faculty of Dept.

                                                            iii.      Open labs, short Powerpoint presentations from faculty about courses and current research projects, poster presenations from students about research projects in conjunction with Dept. and labs.

                                                           iv.      Open one (or more labs) for poster presentations and description of resources & instrumentation in Dept, Powerpoint held in JE 114 (?) Seminar on what to expect for course load in Physics, areas of interest with respect to degree (BS or BA).

b.      Possibility of holding Spring Open House as well

                                                               i.      Open to outside high school and other institutions (involved in different areas and research projects).

                                                             ii.      More time to plan for next semester

 

III.               Other Reports

a.       Robotics making progress

b.      Collaboration with Psi Chi (?) for those interested.

 

IV.              Closing Announcements

a.       Next SoPE meeting will be held on Monday, October 25, 2004, at 1:00 pm.  The meeting will adjourn at 1:45 pm. We will have AV equipment and will go over the new SoPE website (postponed from this week to next meeting).

b.      Any topics you would like to discuss at our next meeting, please contact Jackie (mcguinnessj1@southernct.edu) so to prepare a list of topics for discussion.
