What is a Graduate Student Organization?

Graduate Student organizations (clubs, chapters, etc.) are student-run organizations recognized by the Graduate Student Affairs Committee. A faculty advisor supports and advises each organization. The club concept is designed to promote and enrich a sense of community within and among the graduate departments at SCSU. Each chapter determines its own purpose. Often, clubs choose to encourage educational, recreational, social, cultural and pre-professional activities as a means for building a strong department-based network of peer/professional support for graduate student members. Although elected officers must be graduate students and graduate students must represent the majority of members in a club, undergraduates are welcome to participate in meetings and club activities.

How can you establish and maintain a GSAC-Affiliated Graduate Student Organization?

  • A set of by-laws that establishes the function, duties/responsibilities, membership/officers and meeting schedule of the organization,
  • A faculty advisor,
  • A brief, prepared budget, presented each semester for GSAC consideration, if funding is requested.
  • Contact Mrs. Arlene Lucibello, in the John Lyman Center, at (203) 392-6165 for more information.
