faculty memberThe Department of Communication Disorders offers an undergraduate major in communication disorders and a graduate major in speech-language pathology.  Students who have an undergraduate degree in any field from an accredited university are encouraged to apply for entrance into the graduate program.  Prerequisite course work is incorporated into the student's graduate planned program. Students may choose full-time or part-time study. 

The two final clinical practica take place in off-campus sites, usually during the students' final two semesters and require full-time attendance (typically 40 hours per week). 

 

ADMISSION AND Graduation Rates:

Approximately forty students are admitted to the program each year.  Graduation rates within the published expected time frames for the most recent graduating classes are: 2011 - 89%; 2010 - 91%; 2009 - 89%.  Currently there are 100  full-time students enrolled in the program.

 

LENGTH OF TIME TO COMPLETE PROGRAM:

On average, students who have a bachelor's degree in communication disorders will complete the program in 6-7 semesters of full-time study (including summers), while students who do not have a bachelor's degree or prerequisites in communication disorders will complete the program in 8-10 semesters (including summers).  Students who elect to study part-time are required to complete the program within 6 years, per regulations of the Graduate School.  Students who elect the thesis option may spend an additional 1-2 semesters completing the thesis. 

 

PRAXIS II PASS RATE:

The most recent three year average first time pass rates for the Praxis II Examination are 2011 - 100%; 2010 - 100%; 2009 - 100% 

 

CURRENT PROGRAM EMPLOYMENT RATES:

Employment rate of program graduates is 100 percent within one year following graduation for the graduating classes of 2011, 2010 and 2009 for those students who desire to be employed, have sought employment and have responded to department inquiries regarding employment status.
