faculty memberThe Department of Communication Disorders offers a graduate and undergraduate specialization program in speech-language pathology.  Prospective students who do not have academic preparation in communication disorders are encouraged to apply for entrance into the graduate program.  Prerequisite course work is incorporated into the student's graduate planned program.

Students may choose full-time or part-time study.  Approximately 95 percent of our students are full-time students.  The two final clinical practica take place in off-campus sites, ususally during the students' final two semsters and require full-time (typically 40 hours per week) attendance.

ADMISSION AND Graduation Rates:

Thirty to thirty-five students are admitted to the program each year.  Graduation rate is 88 percent.  The program's current total full-time student count is 102.

LENGTH OF TIME TO COMPLETE PROGRAM:

On average, the program takes 2 to 2 1/2 years of full-time study, including summers, to complete for students who have a bachelor's degree in communication disorders and 3 to 3 1/2 years, including summers, for students who do not have a bachelor's degree or prerequisites in communication disorders.  Students who elect to study part-time are required to complete the program within 6 years per regulations of the Graudate School.  Students who elect the thesis option may spend an additional 1-2 semesters completing the thesis.

The three year average rate of students who complete the program within the expected time frame is 88 percent.  Those individuals who do not complete the program within the expected time frame are typically students who elect part-time status after beginning full-time or students who elect the thesis option.

PRAXIS II PASS RATE:

The three year average first time pass rate for the Praxis II Examination is 85 percent.

CURRENT PROGRAM EMPLOYMENT RATES:

Employment rate of program graduates is 98 percent within one year following graduation, averaged over a three year period.
