school psychology program
Frequently Asked Questions
My undergraduate major wasn't psychology. Will I need to take the prerequisite psychology courses?
Yes. If you don't have a strong background in psychology, you must have completed the following courses or their equivalent:
- Introduction to Psychology
- Developmental Psychology (or Child Development or Child Psychology)
- Educational Psychology or Theories of Learning
- Theories of Personality
- Abnormal Psychology (or Abnormal Child Psychology or Psychopathology)
- Statistics
I am a psychology major, but I'm missing one or two of the above courses. Do I need to take them first?
The stronger your psychology background, the more flexible we may be regarding those specific courses. If selected for a personal interview, we would let you know which of those courses, if any, you need to complete in order to be accepted.
May I register for graduate courses prior to formal admission?
Yes. You are allowed to take up to three courses (9 credits) as a non-matriculated graduate student. It is strongly recommended that the first courses you take are any of the prerequisite courses that you have not completed.
Note: graduate courses taken in our department are not a factor considered in admission to the program.
I've completed all of the prerequisite courses. What would be the appropriate first courses (up to the 9 credits allowed) to take in the program?
Choose from any of these:
- CSP 532 Physical Bases of Behavior and Personality
- CSP 540 Understanding Psychological Testing
- CSP 555 Interpersonal Group Dynamics
- CSP 568 Counseling and Life Span Development
- CSP 569 Theories of Counseling
- CSP 670 Psychology in Schools
- CSP 691 Research Methods
When will I know if I will be admitted?
When all the application materials have been received, the admissions committee will screen your application. Candidates selected for a personal interview will be contacted. You will receive your admissions decision within a few weeks of the interview.
