New Student Opening Days

We are excited to welcome students as they begin the Fall 2014 semester during New Student Opening Days! These mandatory days for first-year students (freshmen) are intentionally designed and will include programs, workshops and social activities to help students acclimate to college life at Southern, explore opportunities for social and co-curricular involvement and provide critical information for student success.

Schedule

Sunday, August 24th

For Students Living On Campus in the Fall 2014
New Student Move-In
If you are living on campus for the Fall 2014 semester you will be moving into your assigned Residence Halls at the time you've selected through the check-in form process. If you have yet to complete your check-in form, please visit (http://www.southernct.edu/student-life/campus-life/residencelife/ ). Mandatory floor meetings will take place at 4pm in your Residence Halls. You are invited to the "Blue Zone" from 5-9 in the Residence Life Quad which will be a fun-filled night of inflatable experiences and recreational games!

Monday, August 25th

Required days for all first-year students
Please be sure to bring your Fall 2014 class schedule and your Hoot Loot Student ID.

Overview
9:00am to 10:00pm
Throughout the day, you will have opportunities to meet new people and make new friends, attend important programs designed to help you be successful in all aspects of college life and further explore Southern's campus and opportunities. The first program on August 25th begins at 9am in the John Lyman Center for the Performing Arts.

Arrival and Parking
If you are commuting to New Student Opening Days please park in the Wintergreen Parking Garage located on Wintergreen Avenue.

Required Activities and Programs
9:00am to 5:15pm
During the day you will meet your learning community, attend programs on student success and healthy relationships and learn what it means to be part of the Southern community. These programs are intentionally designed to help first-year students achieve their goals in their first semester and beyond! Attendance will be taken throughout the day.

Barnes and Noble Freshmen VIP Night!
5:00pm to 7:00pm
You are invited to this special VIP Night in the University bookstore! Food, giveaways, prizes and more!

Dinner and Entertainment
5:30pm to 10:00pm
While this is not a required portion of the day, we strongly encourage you to stay and get to know your new classmates. Bingo Blast will be in Lyman Center at 7pm! This event will combine a game of bingo like you've never seen and include contests for great prizes!

Tuesday, August 26th

Required days for all first-year students
Overview
9:00am to 10:00pm
The first program on August 26th begins with a 9am meeting with your learning community. You will receive the location for your specific room on August 25th.

Required Activities and Programs
9:00am to 4:00pm
During the day you will attend a performance that explores diversity, social justice and several other topics, participate in programs regarding your financial future and learn more about being part of the Southern community. You will also participate in New Student Convocation which is one of Southern's longest traditions. This is the official ceremony recognizing you as a Southern Owl!

Dinner, Student Involvement & Club Fair, and Entertainment
4:00pm to 10:00pm
While this is not a required portion of the day, we strongly encourage you to stay and learn more about getting involved on campus. Immediately following New Student Convocation, Dorm Drive (between Chase and Hickerson Hall) will be filled clubs and organizations showcasing opportunities for you to connect to campus. This event will feature music, "fair" foods and more fun than you can possibly imagine. Later that evening (7:30pm), grab your friends and head to Lyman for a hypnotist show that promises to be hilarious!

Wednesday, August 27th (Encouraged)

You are invited to participate in a fun day of activities. Start your day at 9am in the Adanti Student Center preparing backpacks to be donated to children in the local community. We are collecting NEW backpacks as well as school supplies for local school children. We will be collecting all supplies throughout New Student Opening Days.

The rest of the day will be filled with many activities that you will learn more about during New Student Opening Days.

Thursday, August 28th

The Big Day! The first day of classes!
