Marine Life Expert Selected as Junior Faculty Research Fellow
Sean Grace to Pursue Study of Hard Corals
Sean Patrick Grace, an assistant professor of biology and an expert on aquatic life, is the recipient of Southern’s second annual Junior Faculty Research Fellow award.
Grace has conducted considerable research on corals in Long Island Sound.

Age of the Lobster
Seven years after a die-off dealt a catastrophic blow to the American lobster in western Long Island Sound, Coleen Giannini is completing a study that will help biologists gauge the health of the species and ultimately may affect government regulations for maintaining the region’s lobster population. |

Monk Parakeets in Crisis: Ecological and Economic Issues in Conservation and Management
The Monk Parakeet is an invasive species that contributes biodiversity to otherwise bleak urban landscapes. Unfortunately, the Monk Parakeet nests on transformers cause occasional local power outages. In Fall 2005 the Connecticut UI initiated an eradication program to remove nests from transformers and destroy the birds. Wildlife organizations responded by suing UI which temporarily stopped slaughtering the birds, pending research to alleviate the problem. more... |
