Southern Senior Wins Several Honors

Meredith Ruck, a member of the recently graduated class of 2003, has left an indelible  mark on the Southern Athletic Training Program. The transfer from Wheaton College accumulated several honors during her tenure at SCSU.
Meredith earned several professional awards. She was a scholarship winner for the Connecticut Athletic Trainers' Association in 2002, and Southern's first ever winner of a scholarship from the Eastern Athletic Trainers' Association in 2003. In 2002, she joined Southern grads Dave Morgan and Bill Schwarz as a NATA national

scholarship winner. This list of accolades was finally  completed by becoming Southern's first repeat national scholarship winner in 2003.
However her list of awards was not limited to professional awards. She was a co-winner of the Irma Pelz Scholarship in 2002. Most importantly she was one of five SCSU recipients of the 2003 Henry Barnard Award given annually to the top seniors of each of the four CSU universities.
Upon graduating she accepted a graduate assistantship at Ohio University where she is working with that school's Division !-A foot

Learning Over Time Is In Fashion

The Southern Athletic Training Program has embraced the concept of "learning over time".  The academic courseload has been retuned so that each educational competency will be repeated throughout the student's matriculation through the aca

demic program. Early in the career the student will learn skills at the competency level, then will learn to apply each skill at  a higher level of learning in subsequent courses.
This process required the coordination of several courses

in the academic curriculum and the development of a new type of competency checklist.. In the past the students were graded on their performance of the skill, now upper class students will be expected to demonstrate mastery of the material.(p.2)
