Sarge Called to Arms

Southern graduate Bill  "Sarge" Schwarz had only a semester or so to go to earn a masters in athletic training at Old Dominion University. Things were going well, the thesis was planned, the courses were being completed and then came the call. He was to report to active service in the army.
As part of the call up of reservists following the 9-11 tragedy, Bill was pulled from his studies and has been serving actively as part of the US Special Forces ever since. He has been in several places since

his return to service and has served his country well.  Reportedly he may be returning home this winter and it is unknown whether he will complete his degree.
Sarge is one of several SCSU athletic training alumni and students with current or past military ties. Jesse Wylie was a member of the reserves, Will Tucker was in the army and Mike Eldridge served in Somalia with the US Marines. Current SCSU students, Chris James (USN) served in the first Gulf War and Dorothea Baez (US

Current Students are a Diverse Group

As the Southern Athletic Training Education Program grows, so does the diversity of its student body.  The current student body remains primarily Nutmeggers and residents from local states but incoming students have changed the typical demographics. Recently we have welcomed one grandfather retiree (Chris James) looking for a new career, and a few students for whom English is not the native language (Poland, Japan).

We remain a haven for transfers from various other institutions. Recent additions to our program include transfers from Boston Conservatory, Keene State, Lynchburg College, St. Joseph's College, Quinnipiac University, and Penn State University.
In addition the ethnic diversity has fully developed in the program especially in the sophomore level. These & all students

An example of how this will work  is in the following scenario. Freshmen students in EXS 185 will learn about the basics of injury assessment & management. As sophomores, students will take EXS 288 & 289 , the two orthopedic assessment courses and learn to completely assess athletic injuries. As 2nd semester juniors, students will take EXS 402 Clinical Experience III which will require them to

use earlier information in a primary application setting through case studies and actual clinical practice. Almost all of clinical competencies expected of entry level athletic trainers will be covered in this manner.
As a result future students will have a much better working knowledge of the material and have a higher level of self-
