EXERCISE SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Exercise Science Department at Southern Connecticut State University is to be responsible to the students, corporations, schools, citizens of the State of Connecticut and the nation to whom we provide service. The Exercise Science Department’s principal products are the preparation of students in the areas of a) athletic training (undergraduate), b) human performance (undergraduate and graduate), c) school health (graduate), and d) teacher preparation (undergraduate and graduate). The specialization in athletic training is designed for students interested in the care, prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. The specialization in human performance is designed for students interested in exercise physiology, kinesiology, sports medicine, nutrition and sports psychology. The specialization in school health is designed to prepare students to develop, establish, implement, and evaluate programs of school health education. The specialization in teacher preparation is designed for students who want to teach physical education in public schools. The faculty and staff are dedicated to the total success of the Department as a regional, as well as a national leader in producing high quality students and workers. We believe human development to be the worthiest of goals for our students, to become competent independent thinkers who will nurture growth in the capabilities of people. We are committed to: 1) delivering basic, as well as new developmental knowledge in our fields of study to our students through teaching, demonstrations, and experiences, 2) to contribute to the development of advanced and innovative students who are prepared to interact within and for society and 3) to recruit, motivate, reward, and retain personnel of exceptional ability and dedication by providing good working conditions, superior leadership and opportunity for growth.
