Geography Club

Five members of the geography club attended the 101st meeting of the Association of American Geographers in Denver, Colorado.

The group attended a wide variety of meetings and gained contact with applied geographers. The five-day meeting attracted scientists for every state of the country, and the world. The club took a field trip to Wyoming and traveled west to see the Continental Divide after a tour of Cheyenne. The group also took time to visit a variety of sites in Denver, including the zoo and the state house. As we prepared to return to Connecticut, we were hit by a major storm that paralyzed the region for two days. The club was accompanied by their Advisor Leon Yacher.

What is the Geography Club?
The Geography club is a body of faculty and students who came together with a shared interest in the world about them. We come from all different disciplines (geography, history, education, sociology, economics, tourism, buisness, etc.) and believe that by engaging in geographical thought, we gain insight into our chosen disciplines. It's not just about maps!

What kind of things does the Geography Club do?
Our main goal in the geography club is to bring awareness to the importance of Geography as a discipline and to the importance of discovering our world. This is accomplished in a myriad of ways: club meetings, field trips, tutoring programs, local and regional conferences, and encouraging travel as the best way to learn about our world and ourselves, sharing our experiences and inviting speakers to share theirs. In addition, the Club is building an employment opportunity database for our graduates.

Do I have to give time--am I required to "volunteer"?

Simply, no.We invite you to join us for any meeting or event we offer. There is no requirement to volunteer your services.

Who are the club advisors and officers?
We have two advisors:

  • Dr. Leon Yacher
  • Lee Berman

Club Officers:

  • President: Susan Oram
  • Vice President: Kori Sims
  • Secretary: James Cecarelli
  • Treasurer: James Cecarelli

*The club is currently in transition. Unfortunately our officers are graduating this year, and we are looking for people interested in "taking on the geography torch." As our president has stated, "it is not a lot of work or too much of a commitment, all you need is the desire to want to help a club who has slowly been on the up and up."

Where are the meetings, who do I contact if I am interested?

Meetings are held either Monday or Wednesday, usually at 7:30 pm, in our club office located in Morrill Hall, Room122. During this time you can stop by for tutoring (by appointment) check our events bulletin board, chat with officers, and/or sign up for upcoming field trips. There is also a suggestion box located in the office. We welcome any ideas for future planning. You can also drop a note in the club mail slot located in the Geography Club Department Office, Morrill Hall.
