Application deadline: Rolling admissions SIXTH YEAR PROFESSIONAL DIPLOMA The sixth year program in educational foundations is designed for professionals in education who wish to develop their expertise by broadening their understanding of social, cultural, political, historical and philosophical influences on student learning. Completion of this 30 credit program requires 21 credits of specified educational foundations and leadership courses and 9 credits in graduate level electives. At least 3 credits of electives must be in foundational areas. All program choices are included in a planned program and must be approved by the program coordinator. The course of study permits a degree of flexibility to allow students to pursue areas of interest both within required courses and by choosing electives. This interdisciplinary approach sharpens skills in foundational areas that, in turn, open a wider spectrum of professional and personal interests. In addition to being offered at Southern's campus in New Haven, a number of required courses are offered online. The school is examined as one among agencies and institutions helping children. Scheduled fall, spring, and wintersession semesters. 3 credits. EDF 522Education in Other Nations Comparison of educational systems and practices in various regions of the world. Scheduled summer semesters. 3 credits. DF 523 Social Foundations of Education Selected contemporary problems of American education in broad social contexts. The changing roles of educators in American society. Scheduled fall and spring semesters. 3 credits. EDF 526 History of American Education This course surveys the major historical events, key individuals and policies in American education. Historical analytical strategies are used to examine education from an educational foundations perspective. 3 credits. EDF 600 Independent Study 1-4 credits. EDF 601 Educational Futures A critical examination of social science and humanistic dimensions of educational changes and lifelong education in post-industrial society. Offered on a rotating basis, the course will be scheduled in the summer 2000 semester. 3 credits. EDF 620 The Philosophy of Legal Perspectives in Educational Foundations This course provides a framework for a philosophical analysis of statutory law. Cases and issues that are central to educational foundations, including state statutes that deal with legal principles and rights are addressed from an educational foundational perspective. 3 credits. EDF 655 Foundations of Moral Education Issues, comparative approaches to education for morality. Offered on a rotating basis. 3 credits. EDF 660 Comparative Dynamics and Designs of Educational Change Study of the educational change process, personal change, persistent categories for analyzing change, case studies, and models for more effective change systems. Offered on a rotating basis, the course will be scheduled in the fall 1999 and summer 2001 semesters. 3 credits. EDF 665 Foundations of Multicultural Education Designed to familiarize educators with the social foundations and practice of multicultural education in the classroom. Offered on a rotating basis, the course will be scheduled in the summer 1999 and spring 2001 semesters. 3 credits. EDF 698 Issues in Educational Foundations Introductory course for sixth year students that reviews traditional foundational areas of study and explores current issues in preparation for selection and study of a selected topic. Scheduled fall semesters. 3 credits. EDF 699 Seminar in Educational Foundations A culminating experience that examines, through individual and group processes, a problem area that has been selected by the student and investigated throughout the program. Prerequisite: EDF 698. Scheduled once a year in the spring or summer semester. 3 credits. |
