Curriculum Centers in the CSU System:
Mission, Services, and Resources

Have you ever wondered where teachers in training go to obtain the latest teaching materials, children’s literature, or ideas on what to teach next? The Connecticut State University System has four distinct campuses, Central, Eastern, Southern, and Western. Each university's curriculum center offers unique resources and services that will be useful as you prepare for your teaching career. All campuses offer interlibrary loan; therefore, if you can’t find certain materials at your home campus it is likely that you will be able to borrow it from one of the sister campuses.

The mission of the Curriculum Centers is to provide excellent quality service and resources to our patrons. The main function of the Curriculum Center is to make available for review and analysis an array of high quality instructional materials and supporting services such as reference and user education. The needs of our user community are primary as we strive to collect current pre-K-12 teaching and learning materials that will be beneficial to teachers in training, faculty, and the community.

It is our goal to reach out and create an awareness of the importance of utilizing such materials by offering programming that delivers learning opportunities for all. With this mission in mind it is important to let you know of any new or unique collections that may be of use to you in your teaching career, therefore, we will attempt to profile all four campuses and their offerings.

Curriculum Room Collection

The Curriculum Lab in Burritt Library serves students and faculty in the School of Education & Professional Studies. We provide resources and materials to assist educators in curriculum planning, classroom management and student assessment.
The dual focus of our collection of materials is to:
1. Provide teachers with the resources to help plan curriculum
2. Offer materials that replicate a good school library.

By combining these two collections of materials in a laboratory setting, we provide an area where teachers may work individually or in groups to create curriculum.

We develop subject bibliographies and create displays to showcase curriculum lab materials and to serve as an example for student teachers. Each month two to three new subjects are featured.

The materials in the Curriculum Lab are cataloged using the Dewey Decimal System and are circulated through the main circulation desk. Each type of material is housed in a separate section rather than inter-shelved. Equipment is available to preview non-print materials. In addition to the education databases such as ERIC and Education Index, our Curriculum Lab has Kraus Curriculum Guides and AV Online in electronic format.

Print Materials Include: Juvenile Picture Books, Juvenile & Young Person Fiction, Juvenile & Young Person Non-Fiction, Professional Reading, Educational Tests, andTextbooks.

Non-Print Materials: Include: Aids & Games, Art File, CD-Roms, Pamphlet File, ,Picture File, Posters, Slides, Tapes, and Videocassettes.

The Curriculum Lab is located on the third floor of Burritt Library, behind the Reference Department. Materials are available all hours that the library is open.

The Learning Resources Center continues to provide a highly technical centralized facility to serve the total University community. The Center provides equipment and software for the needs of those academic departments which reflect changes in curriculum development. Many of these curriculum changes directly affect the growth and direction of the University in the community and the state.

As the emphasis of the University shifts from the traditional educational areas of the curriculum to the more professional and technical oriented areas, the center will attempt to meet these needs by acquiring the appropriate equipment and resources to meet the requirements of course offerings and the special demands of students. The emphasis of the center is on "service" to both the students and faculty. The center has a philosophy of openness and is committed to excellence in teaching and learning.
