CLINICAL EXPERIENCES:
Fifteen of the 69 required credits are clinical experiences that involve a combination of work in an agency setting and at the Family Clinic. All clinical requirements are consistent with those set forth in the 1995 Connecticut MFT licensing bill. Students are required to complete all clinical hours in a minimum of 12 consecutive calendar months not to exceed a maximum of 24 consecutive calendar months. Students should insure that their circumstances are such that they will be able to meet these requirements before beginning their clinical component of the program. A minimum of 500 hours of clinical contact are required in the program. A minimum of 300 hours must be face-to-face with couples and families. Group and individual supervision must be a part of clinical experiences. Supervision must be provided by an AAMFT approved supervisor who is a licensed MFT.

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE GOALS:
The goal of the clinical experience is to provide opportunities for students to practice and integrate theory, style, and skills as Marriage and Family Therapists. General goals include:

  1. Professional use of self as a change agent.
  2. Maintenance of an active client case load.
  3. Integration of Structural Family Therapy into practice.
  4. Knowledge of the marriage and family therapy code of ethics and utilization into practice.
  5. Written and oral communication skills.
  6. Professional presentation.
  7. Active participation in Connecticut Association for Marriage and Family Therapy at the student level.
  8. Awareness of student role in group process.
  9. Appreciation of differences amongst people.
  10. Knowledge of marital and family therapy literature.
  11. Knowledge of methodology of case management.
  12. Accounting of supervised experience and training.

In their clinical experience on campus students are required to maintain an on-going case load that includes supervised visits, anger-management groups, individuals, couples, and families. A minimum of 50 hours of relational therapy must be performed with live one-way mirror supervision.
