
Program Requirements
The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation
for Marriage and Family Therapy Education. To comply with
this accreditation, the student must meet program requirements
in order to be granted the MFT degree. A minimum of 69 credits
is required for graduation.
- Eight (8) core courses in marriage and family therapy theory and practice:
- MFT 561: Structural Family Therapy
- MFT 597: Family of Origin
- MFT 586: Family and Individual Development Over the Life Cycle
- MFT 598: Family Systems Theory I
- MFT 588: Family Assessment
- MFT 658: Topics in Family Studies
- MFT 661: Marital Systems and Couples Therapy
- MFT 668: Family Systems Theory II
- Five (5) clinical courses which involve a combination
of work in an agency setting and at the University’s Family
Therapy Clinic:
- MFT 562: Marriage and Family Therapy Practicum
I
- MFT 563: Marriage and Family Therapy Practicum
II
- MFT 662: Internship and Seminar I
- MFT 663: Internship and Seminar II
- MFT 664: Internship and seminar III
- Three (3) general professional courses which include:
- PCH 545: Human Sexuality
- MFT 620: Professional, Ethical and Legal Issues in MFT
- PCH 546: Contemporary Issues in Substance Abuse
- One (1) psychology course: PSY 528: Psychopathology.
- One (1) research course: MFT 587: Marriage and Family
Therapy Research
- Five (5) Gestalt Therapy training courses:
- MFT 505: Gestalt Therapy Training - Introduction
- MFT 506: Gestalt Therapy Training - Intermediate
- MFT 507: Gestalt Therapy Training - Advanced
- MFT 508: Gestalt Theory I: Introduction to Gestalt
Theory/Practice
- MFT 509: Advanced Gestalt Theory/Practice
Additional Gestalt Therapy courses:
Students are expected to become members of their professional
organization at the appropriate level. In addition to academic
requirements, continuance in the program is contingent upon
positive on-going faculty evaluation of academic performance,
therapist attributes, and appropriateness of reaction and
responses in real and/or simulated situations.
