SUPERVISION:
The following supervision requirements are in effect for all clinical
work:
- Supervision is the close monitoring by a supervisor of each student’s
current therapy cases.
- Students will be supervised every calendar week in which they treat
therapy cases.
- Students behind the one-way mirror may receive credit for group
supervision provided that (1) at least one supervisor is present behind the
one-way mirror, (2) there are no more than six students present behind the
mirror, and (3) the supervisory experience involves an interactional process
between the student-therapist, the treatment team, and the supervisor.
- Supervision of two students (dyadic supervision) can be counted as
equivalent to supervision of an individual. One hour of individual
supervision per week is mandatory.
- If other students are present when a supervisor is conducting live
supervision, only the therapist(s) in the room with the client may count the
time as individual supervision.
- Group supervision, defined as the monitoring by a supervisor of the
current cases of a group of students, is required and will not exceed six
students per group.
CLINICAL HOURS AND SUPERVISION:
The student must total at least 300 hours in face-to-face contact with
couples and families, 50 of which must be completed at the Family Therapy
Clinic. The remaining clinical hours (200) may be accumulated while working
with individuals and groups. Students must maintain at least 10 hours of
clinical work per week for each semester they are enrolled in practicum and
internship. An individual supervision ratio of 1 hour to 5 clinical hours
must be maintained. Supervision can include case
presentations, video/audio tapes of the students’ work and live supervision.
AAMFT requires that at least 50% of material presented to supervisors’ raw
data, i.e., audiotapes, videotaped, or live viewing. Group supervision
(with no more than 6 individuals in a groups) is also viewed as a valuable
learning experience. Students are expected to structure their supervision
to maximize their learning process. Students must have received 100 hours
of individual supervision at time of graduation with no less than a minimum
50 hours utilizing direct observation.
*It is the student’s responsibility to maintain accurate records of their
accumulating hours and to keep copies of these records in his/her file in the
Marriage and Family Therapy Department. Students must present documentation
of supervision and clinical hours to placement supervisors at the end of each
month. Supervisors must sign documentation forms to validate the information
recorded by the student. When a student applies for graduation, written
evidence of these hours must be presented. Supervisors at off-campus
placement sites must be AAMFT Approved Supervisors, Supervisors-in-Training,
or the equivalent, and Connecticut licensed Marriage and Family Therapists.
CLIENT CONTACT AND SUPERVISION HOURS:
Assuming that all supervision and client contact hours meet COAMFTE
requirements outlined in the Manual on Accreditation, hours of contact and
supervision may be counted as follows:
- Supervision behind a one-way mirror: Students behind a one-way mirror
in groups of to six persons may receive group supervision, provided an
appropriate supervisor is present and the students are actively participating
the session. Passive observation of other students’ cases is not counted as
supervision. Up to two students seeing a client on the other side of the
one-way mirror may concurrently receive client contact and individual
supervision, provided the supervisor is actively supervising the case
(i.e., phone-ins, consultations, etc.).
- Video individual and group supervision: When a student presents a
video tape in group supervision, the student receives individual and group supervision
provided no more than five additional students (for a total of six) are
present with a supervisor. The additional five or fewer students receive
group supervision, provided they are actively involved in the process.
- Group supervision: Group supervision consists of a supervisor and
six or fewer students. Regardless of the number of supervisors present,
a group cannot exceed six students and qualify for group supervision.
For example, eight students and two supervisors are not appropriate because
the number of students exceed six.
- Therapy and supervision involving supervisors and supervisees: If a
supervisor and no more than two supervisees are physically present in the
treatment room, the supervisee may receive client contact (if the supervisor
and supervisee are co-therapists), or supervision, but not both. The role
of the supervisors (supervisor or co-therapist) should be clearly defined
prior to the session.
PROCEDURAL INFORMATION:
All graduate classes meet from September to May on a once a week basis,
in the evenings for 2 1/2 hours. Class times are 5:00-7:30 PM and 7:35-10:05 PM.
There are three summer sessions. Session I and III meets four evenings a week
for 2 hours over a five-week period. Session II meets five days per week,
mornings or evenings, for five weeks. Additional information is available
in the general catalogue. Clinic requirements may necessitate additional
time over and above these parameters.
