In the Fall of 2001,
a new technology program was created at Southern Connecticut
State University. This program, referred to as STARS (Student
Technology Assistance RepresentativeS) brings students, faculty
and Information Technology personnel together in a collaborative
effort to explore the use of technology in teaching and learning. |

What do STARS
do? |
|
| |
|
|
| |
STARS are trained to
work one-on-one with SCSU faculty members and/or IT personnel
to develop and contribute to the critical mass of technological
understanding on campus. |

|
| |
How are STARS
selected? |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Students of any major
are competitively selected based on academic grounds and to
a lesser extent based on their technical skills. A STAR is
hired
for up to 16 hours per week to work. |

|
|
| |
What will STARS
learn? |
|
| |
|
|
| |
Throughout
their tenure at SCSU, STARS will receive extensive training
in the software and hardware tools used at the university.

What is the
big picture? |
|
| |
|
|

Southern Connecticut
State University believes that in education today new technologies
have become the paradigm for transforming the way our students
see and understand the world. As such, SCSU STARS graduates
will leave Southern with a deeper understanding of how to
become effective in a work force increasingly influenced by
growth in technology. Students in the STARS program can be
from any discipline. STARS could major in English, History,
Spanish, as well the disciplines normally associated with
technology such as Computer Science, Physics, Math, etc. Thus
STARS will graduate from SCSU in disciplines that - while
traditionally unrelated to technology - complement the types
of skills required in a technologically based work force.
Businesses get a student with the skills associated with a
liberal arts background as well as a student capable of applying
those skills using technology. In short: STARS get jobs .
