MySCSU Documents

MySCSU

  1. What is MySCSU?
MYSCSU is a collection of services offered to SCSU students, staff and faculty. Users with a MYSCSU account acquire:
    - an e-mail address with 10 MB storage space
    - 10 MB of web space on the MYSCSU web server
    - dialup access to the MYSCSU modem pools (For Faculty & Staff only)

  2. What is the URL for the MySCSU log in page?
    http://myscsu.southernct.edu or http://owl.southernct.edu

  3. Why does the url http://www.myscsu.southernct.edu give me a "The Page Cannot Be Displayed" error message?
For now, the WWW is not part of the URL for MySCSU; use the urls shown above.

  4. What Browser's are supported by MySCSU ?

    Browser

    Operating System
    Version
    Netscape Windows and
    Macintosh OS 9
    7.2
    Netscape
    Mac OS X v10.3

    7.1

    MS Internet Explorer
    Windows 5.5 SP2 and 6.0 SP1
    Macintosh OS 9 None
Mozilla Windows and Mac OS X v10.3 1.7
    Safari Mac OS X v10.3 1.1, 1.2

  5. Can I save my MySCSU logon ID and password on my computer so I don't have to type them in each time?
For now, the answer is no.

  6. How do I obtain an MYSCSU Account?
Your account will be automatically created once you are enrolled or employed at SCSU.
  7. Will we get general announcements from Patrick Dilger's office via MySCSU?
Eventually, these announcements will be included in MySCSU as "targeted announcements" and will not be sent via e-mail as they are now.

  8. Is there a way to have different passwords for Banner and MySCSU?
No. A feature of Campus Pipeline called "password synchronization" has been enabled. This feature synchronizes your Banner Web PIN with your MySCSU email password. To change your MySCSU password, you must change your Banner Web PIN. WHEN YOU UPDATE YOUR BANNER WEB PIN, YOUR MySCSU PASSWORD WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY CHANGED TO THE BANNER WEB PIN. Therefore, you will have a single password/PIN for both Banner Web and email services.

  9. Can we access all the areas of Banner through the MySCSU connection?
Only the parts of Banner that are accessible through BANNER Web will also be accessible through MySCSU. Other areas of Banner will still require a client application for access.

  10. Will I need to change my MySCSU password on a regular basis?
Your password protects your account from unauthorized access by others, maintains the privacy of your e-mail messages and prevents other users from posing as you to perform malicious or illegal operations.

To maintain the security of your account, change your password regularly (at least every semester or 4-6 months). If you suspect that another person may have access to your account, change your password immediately. Your password should be easy for you to remember but difficult for other people to guess. A good password consists of a combination of letters and other characters, often with unusual spelling and/or capitalization. To keep other people from guessing your password, do not use words such as your favorite color, the names of friends, family members or pets, or numbers such as your birth date or telephone number.

Note: Changing your password in different programs (Netscape, Eudora, Outlook Express) does NOT change your password on the MYSCSU server.

You can change your MYSCSU password by following the link on the My Pipeline page of MySCSU.
  11. Are log in ID's and Password's case-sensitive?
    Yes.

  12. What do I do if I forget my password?
You will need to contact the HelpDesk (392-5123) who can arrange to change your password.

  13. Who can I call or email for guidance or help?
    The SCSU HelpDesk 392-5123

  14. When I log on to MySCSU, sometimes I see MySCSU as the address, and sometimes I see OWL. Is there a difference?
NO, MySCSU and OWL are the same computer and mean the exact same thing.

  15. Sometimes when I access a MySCSU screen, my screen goes blank. Why?
MySCSU is a web based product that uses Javascript and Java Applets.
These are programming directions for your computer and may take a
little time to download. Please be patient. If you wait a while and
still cannot see screen, click the refresh or reload button. If you still can't see a screen after trying this, please call the IT HelpDesk at 392-5123.

  16. Can I continue to use RADIUS to connect to the internet and to MySCSU?
Yes. Your access to the internet via RADIUS will not change; and you can continue to use Eudora, Outlook, or Entourage to send an recieve email using your SCSU account as before.

  17. Why does MySCSU make me login so often?
As a security measure, MySCSU has a timeout feature that causes the program to close after a set time of inactivity. You can lengthen this timeout period to as long as 60 minutes by Clicking on the Options link from the My Pipeline page, and then clicking on TIMEOUT.

  18. Do I have to log out?
Yes. You should get into the habit of logging out of MySCSU. This prevents others from accessing your account through any browser windows that you may have inadvertently left open.

EMAIL

  1. How do I get my email program (Outlook or Eudora) configured for IMAP
IMAP isn't much different than setting up a POP3 email account (like our old system). Instructions for how to set up Eudora and Outlook for MySCSU email are on the Documentation and Information Pages.

  2. How do I log in to check my email?
After you log in to MySCSU at http://myscsu.southernct.edu, click on the email icon.
  1. Will Students be assigned an e-mail account as soon as they register for a course?
Yes. MySCSU is "Event Driven", which means that as information is added or updated in the BANNER system (such as the registration of a new student), that new information is passed to MySCSU automatically, including the generation of a MySCSU log on ID and e-mail address.

  2. Will Part Time Students have an e-mail account?
Yes. All Students will have an e-mail account in the MySCSU system.

  3. Can we still use Microsoft Outlook or Eudora for e-mail?
Yes. Even though our new e-mail system is web-based, you can use an e-mail client like Outlook, Outlook Express, Entourage, and Eudora to send and receive e-mail.

While off campus, you can still use Outlook and Eudora to send and receive your email if you set the programs up correctly.

In Outlook -- From the main menu, choose Tools/Accounts.
Select Properties for the MySCSU account. In Properties, click
Servers, then uncheck "My server requires authentication" under
    "Outgoing Mail Server".

In Eudora -- Select Options, then Sending Mail. Uncheck "Allow
    Authentication".

  4. Can we use both the Web and an e-mail client for e-mail?
Yes. Note that while you can use any mail client, such as Outlook, Eudora, or MySCSU's email window, it is recommended that you only use one at a time because the system only allows one email connection for any given user. Having two programs open at once could cause error messages. Fortunately, it is impossible to corrupt your email messages if you do happen to have two clients opened at once.

  5. How much disk space will we have on the e-mail server?
One Hundred megabytes for Faculty and Staff, 10 megabytes for Students.

Students who have reached the 10 MB quota, will have all new e-mail messages returned to the sender.

  6. Is there a warning before our e-mail disk space quota is met?
Yes. When you reach 90 percent of your disk space quota, you will be advised automatically.

  7. Is there a limit to the size that a single e-mail message may be?
    Yes. 10 megabytes, including attachements.
  1. Will the fact that all of our e-mail messages are stored on the same server slow the system down?
No. MySCSU is not like our old VAX system, which occasionally did become overburdened. The new e-mail servers are quite able to handle all of our requirements for years to come.

  2. How soon will we have to change our business cards or other documents to reflect a new e-mail address?
Your old e-mail addresses will continue to be delivered to you indefinitely, so you can continue to use materials that reference those addresses until it's time to reorder. At that point, you should include your new e-mail address. Addresses that will continue to function include:
      • yourname@southernct.edu
      • yourname@scsu.ctstateu.edu
      • yourname@scsud.ctstateu.edu
  3. When will the VAX computer (and its data) be unplugged?
The VAX will be decommissioned on July 1, 2002 and will remain available (though not be active) until July 1, 2003

  4. If we have archived e-mail on our desktop computers can we upload it to the IMAP server?
Yes. First, create a new mail account for your MySCSU e-mail address in Outlook or Eudora, which will create a new inbox in your Folders Tree. Then drag and drop the mail messages into the new inbox. When you open the web-based e-mail, the messages will be there.

  5. What is my new e-mail address?
In most cases it will be your last name plus your first initial plus the number 1@southernct.edu (example: doej1@southernct.edu). In cases where two people share the same last name and first initial, one of them will have the number 1; the second, the number 2; and any others get sequentially higher numbers.

Users with hyphenated names should drop the hyphen and only use the first ten letters of their last name.
Other characters that should be omitted from your name are spaces and apostrophes.

You can find your e-mail address by logging onto BANNER Web. Refer to these Instructions for how to do this.

  6. Will all of my e-mail addresses show up in MySCSU?
You can add other e-mail addresses, for example your home e-mail address or another SCSU e-mail address to MySCSU; however, AOL email -- which is a proprietary system -- will not work. By default, only your primary SCSU e-mail address is automatically set up. To set up other accounts:
      1. Open the email window in MySCSU
      2. Click on the options tab
      3. Choose Retrieve Other E-mail and follow the instructions.
  7. Is there a character limit to my e-mail name?
Yes. Ten characters. Special characters -- like spaces, the ampersand (&), etc. -- cannot be used.

  8. Does MySCSU e-mail have a spell checker?
Yes. However, it doesn't run automatically. You need to click a button to activate it.

  9. Can I attach documents to my e-mail messages?
Yes, you can. And you can download attachments to any local computer, as well.

  10. Will there be an online directory with everyone's e-mail address?
    Yes. It's located at http://www.southernct.edu/search/email/.

  11. Can I create specialized folders within MySCSU e-mail?
Yes. You can create new folders and even sub-folders within your personalized MySCSU e-mail account.

  12. Will the MySCSU e-mail format my e-mail better than Eudora does now?
The appearance of "fixed fonts" (like Courier) and "proportional fonts" (like Times New Roman) will continue to be an issue, even with MySCSU. Sorry.

  13. Will attachments be sent along with e-mail that I forward?
Yes. MySCSU e-mail will forward attachments along with the e-mail message that holds it.

  14. Does the email client work with Dragon Naturally Speaking and other voice
    recognition packages?
    We're checking.

  15. Will the messages I receive in MySCSU e-mail be formatted better than they were in Eudora?
The appearance of "fixed fonts" (like Courier) and "proportional fonts" (like Times New Roman) will continue to be an issue, even with MySCSU. Sorry.

  16. I'm a MAC user. What e-mail clients will work with MySCSU email?
If your computer has MAC OS 9, you may use Eudora version 5 or greater, Outlook Express, or Microsoft Entourage.
If your computer has MAC OS 10, then you can use Eudora 5 or greater and MS Entourage (which
, for OS 10, is essentially the same as MS Outlook ).

  17. Can I set up my AOL email account in MySCSU?
No. AOL is a proprietary email system that does not work with MySCSU.

  18. How do I send an e-mail message that I've saved as a draft? There doesn't seem to be an option to send.
Choose EDIT MSG, which then allows you to send a message you have saved as a draft.

  19. I delete each message separately with the "delete" which appears when the
message is open. How do I delete several messages at once?
Highlight an email folder. Click the checkbox next to any messages you want to delete, then click the "delete" icon. If you have set the option to retain deleted messages in the "DELETED" Folder, the messages will now appear there; otherwise, they will be permanently removed from the system.

  20. How do I throw the accumulated trash out?
With the "DELETED" folder highlighted, check all the messages you'd like to permanently delete from the system, then click the "delete" icon.

  21. Do I have to log out?
Yes. You should get into the habit of logging out of MySCSU. This prevents others from accessing your account through any browser windows that you may have inadvertently left open.

  22. I have "blocked" email from certain senders, but I still get them. Then, when I try to re-block them, the program tells me they are already blocked. What should I do?
MySCSU email will only block a message if its marked as unread. It's possible that you read the email using another client (like Eudora or Outlook) first, then used the MySCSU email, where you discovered the message was not blocked. Try removing the block on the sender, marking the message as unread, and blocking it again. Blocked messages will be moved to the deleted folder.

  23. Will my account remain after I leave the university?
Upon ending your affiliation with SCSU, your MYSCSU account will be deleted. You will receive an e-mail warning of the upcoming deletion.

Students: Your account will be automatically maintained as “Alum” the semester following your graduation unless you inform us otherwise. However, if you are not using the service after one year, your account will not be deleted . You will receive an e-mail message before your account is deleted.

Faculty and Staff: Your account will be deleted the semester after leaving SCSU. You will receive an e-mail message before your account is deleted.

CALENDAR

  1. Can we share our calendars with other people?
Yes. One of the most versatile features of MySCSU Calendar is the ability to create different calendars and grant permission to others to view, add, and change items in them. Of course, calendars can also be kept private.

  2. Will the Calendar from WebCT be accessible from MySCSU?
Not with the version of WebCT that we currently use; however, when we upgrade our WebCT software, MySCSU will integrate with it, including its calendar feature.

  3. Will my course calendar(s) automatically include events from the SCSU calendar?
Not automatically; however, campus wide calendars are planned. Any number of calendars (including course calendars) can then be "grouped" into a single calendar view for efficient time management.

  4. Can I synchronize my Outlook Calendar with the MySCSU calendar?
Yes. Call the HelpDesk at X25123 to have the special synchronization software installed and configured on your computer.

Personal Web Space

  1. How much web space do I have on the SCSU webserver?
There is a 10 MB quota on the MYSCSU web server for files including HTML, graphics and any other files that you display on your personal web pages. If you need more web space, contact call the OIT, Help Desk Center X25123

  2. What is the HOST Name for my personal web space?
The Host Name for your FTP program is home.southernct.edu. Your Logon ID and Password are the same as for MySCSU.

  3. What is the URL for my personal web page?
    http://www.home.southernct.edu/~your_myscsu_username/
