Heating Curve of Water

PHY 200 & 230

When water is heated under atmospheric pressure, two things occur. One is a change in temperature. The other is a change in phase. These two properties will be studied to determine the heat of fusion and the heat of vaporization of water. The purpose of this experiment is to determine the heat of fusion and the heat of vaporizaton of water.

Equipment

Name Location Quantity
Stainless Steel Cans JE-105A-S34 1 per table
Calorimeter - Outer Can JE-105A-S34 1 per table
Stainless Steel Lids JE-105A-S28 1 per table
Rods, Stirring JE-105A-S78 1 per table
Thermometer, Digital, Traceable - 389 JE-105A-D77 1 per table
Ring Stand JE-105A-D82,83 S150 1 per table
Rods, Metal JE-105A-D89,99,100 1 per table
Timer - 389 JE-105A-D62 1 per table
Clamp, Test Tube JE-105A-D66 1 per table
Hot Plates JE-105A-S40 1 per table
Cooler JE-105A-S117 2 per room

Notes

For the ring stand, use the metal rods in D89 and the tripod bases that are next to the ice machine, if possible. Make sure the rods fit the bases. Clamp on the test tube clamp and slide it down the rod.

Make sure that the room has plenty of paper. Fill the two coolers with ice.
