Robert
Cipriano
Professor
Chairperson – Recreation and Leisure Studies
Dr.
Cipriano came to SCSU as Chairperson in 1978. Dr. Cipriano received
a Doctor of Education (Ed D.) degree in Therapeutic Recreation and
College Teaching from New York University. He is the author of two
textbooks, and has published over 63 articles and manuscripts. Dr.
Cipriano has been invited to present in more than 200 workshops
and seminars, throughout the country and Indonesia. Dr. Cipriano
has expertise in grantwriting and has been funded for more than
nine million dollars in state, federal, corporate, and foundation
grants and contracts. In addition, he has reviewed federal proposals
for the U.S. Department of Education twelve times. Dr. Cipriano’s
academic interests include grantwriting, curriculum design, and
therapeutic recreation. He is a member of the National Recreation
and Park Association, Connecticut Recreation and Park Association,
and T.A.S.H.

Roy
Hunter, Ph.D.
Associate Professor
Dr. Hunter joined the faculty of the Department
of Recreation and Leisure Studies at SCSU for the Fall 2004 semester.
Just before coming to Southern, he had worked twelve years for the
Hurricane Island Outward Bound School as an instructor and course
director. Before working for Outward Bound he served as as Assistant
Professor in recreation programs at Virginia Commonwealth University
and Kansas State University. His degrees include: B. S. in Outdoor
Recreation, Utah State University, M. S. in Recreation, University
of Kentucky, and Ph.D. in Recreation, University of Maryland. Dr.
Hunter's professional and academic interests include: outdoor adventure
leadership and management, outdoor programs for at-risk youth, recreation
as a stress coping mechanism, and research methods.

Jim
MacGregor
Assistant Professor
Coordinator
of the Graduate Program
Professor MacGregor has been faculty member of the Recreation and
Leisure Studies Department since the fall of 1997. He has over sixteen
years of clinical and administrative experience in therapeutic recreation
services. He has served as Director of Recreational Therapy for
the Rehabilitation Center of Fairfield County for twelve years and
as Executive Director of a community based behavioral health rehabilitation
non-profit agency for three years. Professor MacGregor is currently
pursuing an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from the University
of Hartford. He earned an M.S. degree in Therapeutic Recreation
Administration from SCSU. He is nationally certified as a Certified
Therapeutic Recreation Specialist. Professor MacGregor serves as
state liaison for the New England Therapeutic Recreation Association
and has been a board member of Advanced Behavioral Health. He is
a member of the National Recreation and Parks Association, New England
Therapeutic Recreation Association, American Therapeutic Recreation
Association, and Connecticut Recreation and Parks Association. Professor
MacGregor’s academic interests include therapeutic recreation,
leadership and supervision, and non-profit management.

Joe
Panza
Associate Professor
Coordinator, The Center for Non-Profit Organizations
Dr. Panza became a member of the Recreation and Leisure Studies
Department in the Fall of 2000. Dr. Panza received an Ed.D. in Education
Administration from the University of Pennsylvania, and a M.A. degree
in Rehabilitation Counseling from Seton Hall University. Dr. Panza
has over 30 years experience leading government not for profit human
service organizations. Dr. Panza served on the board of directors
for the Alliance for Personal Choice, co-chaired the Conference
of Executives of the Arc of Connecticut. He is a member of the Connecticut
Association of Non-Profit (CAN), Connecticut Community Providers
Association (CCPA), The Association for Persons with Severe Handicaps
(TASH), The American Association of Mental Retardation (AAMR), CRPA,
and Association for Research on Non-Profit Organizations and Voluntary
Action (ARNOVA). Dr. Panza’s professional interests include
leadership, non-profit management, and strategies of organizational
change, as well as disability advocacy and services.

Deborah
Smith
Associate Professor
Dr. Smith became a member of the Recreation
and Leisure Studies Department at Southern Connecticut in the Fall
of 2003. She formerly served as as Assistant Professor in the Department
of Health Education and Recreation at Southern Illinois University.
She received both her M. S. and Ph.D. decrees in Recreation Administration
from Indiana University and her B. A. degree in Comparative Literature
and Philosophy from Dickinson College. She has held a variety of
professional experiences in the field, primarily concerned with
the management of youth and community recreation services. She is
a member of the National Recreation and Park Association and the
Connecticut Recreation and Park Association. Dr. Smith's teaching
and professional interests include programming, management, youth
development, community development, and pedagogy.
