Admission
Requirements
1.
Consistent with University policy, the applicant must also be accepted
by the School of Graduate Studies as a matriculated student for
acceptance by the Department.
2.
Applicants must, either through a personal essay or interview, express
their reasons for seeking a Master's degree in Recreation Administration,
Therapeutic Recreation, or College Teaching.
3.
Competitive admissions determine the final selection of students
from the pool of applicants. An Admission Screening Matrix, using
data provided by the student, is utilized in making determinations.
4.
The Department requires evidence that the applicant has achieved
a QPR of 2.5 in an unspecified undergraduate degree program.*
*The
University will waive this requirement for a limited number of students
who receive departmental recommendation and approval from the Dean
of the School of Graduate Studies.
ACADEMIC
PERFORMANCE
1.
A graduate student must maintain a QPR of 3.0 to remain in good
standing.
2.
Students who are admitted under "conditional acceptance"
are required to earn a "B" grade or higher in courses
specified on individual planned programs.
3.
Monitoring of each student's academic performance is conducted by
the Graduate Program Coordinator at the end of each academic semester.
This is done via the VAX, and progress reports which are provided
by the Office of Graduate Studies.
EXIT
REQUIREMENTS
1.
To successfully complete the program, a student must complete the
required number of credit hours as defined on the individually planned
program (minimum of 30 credit hours).
2.
Students must successfully complete the required culminating experiences,
which include either: thesis, special project, and/or comprehensive
examination (oral or written).
CRITERIA
FOR ORAL COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATION
1.
Students may elect to have one professional attend the examination.
2.
A minimum of two full-time Southern Connecticut State University
Recreation and Leisure Studies faculty must be present for the examination.
3.
Students are expected to demonstrate knowledge in:

research
-
philosophy
-
leadership/supervision
-
management
-
field of specialization
4.
The oral examination typically consists of one-hour of intellectual
discourse.
5.
Students are expected to articulate their plans and expectations
concerning future professional endeavors in the field of recreation
and leisure.
CRITERIA
FOR WRITTEN COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATION
1.
Essay Format: The student is presented with five questions, from
which he/she selects three to fully develop.
