Employment Opportunities in the Office of Residence Life

 

Student Employment Positions (APPLY HERE)

The Residence Life Student Employees report directly to the Director of the Residence hall/apartment/suite building and the Associate Director of Residence Life. They assist in the daily operation and functions of the Residence Life Offices; executing various duties specified by their supervisors. In addition to offering support to basic office/facility needs, student employees contribute to the continued success of the campus community by responding to student and guest questions, needs, and concerns that impact their safety. Student employees also aid in addressing University policy violations and reporting of criminal activity to University police. Residence Life student employees act as members of the Residence Life Emergency Response Staff that assists during residence hall and campus emergencies as necessary. The students employed by the Residence Life Office essentially reinforce a core belief that residence halls should not merely be safe places to sleep, but also to "live, learn, and grow." Through these positions, students are given the opportunity to take leadership within the offices and gain valuable experience that will benefit them in the future.

 

Administrative Assistants are responsible for assisting with basic office administrative responsibilities within residence hall offices and the Office of Residence Life.

 

Desk Attendants assist in responding to student and guest questions, needs, and concerns, and aid in the safety/security of the residence hall. Additionally, Desk Attendants assist with general office administrative support.

 

Operations Assistants are responsible for assisting with basic facility operations.

 

Computer Lab Assistants contribute to the security of the computer lab and provide assistance with basic questions regarding the use of computer equipment and/or software.

 

Summer Student Employment Positions

The Residence Life Summer Student Employees report directly to the Associate Director of Residence Life. Their duties vary through multiple areas of assistance with the safety and success of the campus environment during the summer months. In addition to providing support for general office/facility needs to each hall/apartment/suite building, employees are responsible for offering support for summer school programs, summer conferences, and University summer programs being housed in on-campus residence halls/apartments/suites. Summer employees supervise a floor/area of students, youths, or adults residing in on campus residence halls during summer programs, supporting communication, guest relations, and customer service. Summer employees also aid in addressing University policy violations and reporting of criminal activity to University Police. Residence Life employees act as members of the Residence Life Emergency Response Staff, expected to assist during residence hall and campus emergencies as necessary. The Residence Life Summer Student Employment presents students with the prospect of taking leadership within the offices and gaining valuable experiences that are beneficial to their future. The positions fundamentally reinforce a core belief in Residence Life that our campus community is a safe place for students to “live, learn, and grow” during the summer as well as the academic year.

 

Summer Associates hold two sets of responsibilities throughout the summer months. They are responsible for providing support for summer school programs, summer conferences, and University summer programs being housed in on-campus residence halls AND they are also responsible for assisting with basic facility operations within residence hall offices and the Office of Residence Life.

 

Summer Associate Supervisors are responsible for providing direction for the successful completion of Summer Associate crews consisting of 8-10 employees, AS WELL AS fulfilling the same responsibilities in supporting summer school programs, summer conferences, and University summer programs being housed in on-campus residence halls.    

 

STUDENT EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS

Desk Attendant/Operations Assistant/Computer Lab Assistant Applicants-

         Must be a current fulltime, matriculated SCSU student.

         Undergraduate Students must have a minimum 2.0 GPA at the time of application. Graduate students must have a 2.7 GPA at the time of application.

        All employment offers are made for the 2010-2011 academic year. All Summer Associates are required to participate in an employment review for continuing employment for subsequent years.

        Effective January 2008, employees terminated from a position in Residence Life are ineligible for employment in the same/other newly applied to positions for 1 year from the date of termination. Employees resigning from a position prior to the end of the semester are ineligible for employment in the same position for 1 semester from the date of resignation with the exception of students withdrawing from the University.

        All candidates are subject to academic and judicial checks prior to employment offers and start of employment.

 

Summer Student Employment Applicants-

(applications for Summer Employment will be accepted in Spring 2010)

         Summer employees are REQUIRED to live on campus during the summer.

         Candidates must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.0 at the time of application and during employment. Employees falling below a 2.0 during employment will be placed on academic employment probation for a maximum of one semester in which the overall GPA must be raised to a 2.0 to maintain employment. All employment offers are made for the 2009 summer.

         Summer Student Workers are REQUIRED to provide In-Hall supervision and support during Special Olympics weekend scheduled in June 2010.

         Summer Associate Supervisors are REQUIRED to have prior working experience as a Summer Associate.

Community Advisor/Coordinator Positions

Community Advisors/Coordinators have an important role as peer facilitators and leaders within the residence hall community.  For this reason, CA’s/CC’s must have an interest in assisting fellow students with their personal and academic development. This requires that the candidate demonstrate an acceptable degree of skills in communication, managing conflict, facilitating individual and community development, and developing and implementing educational and social programs.  Successful candidates will also be expected to demonstrate that they can be a positive academic and personal role model for others, have a sincere interest in the welfare of others, demonstrate a positive attitude about their residence hall and university experience, and display reasonable judgment in their language, behaviors, and attitude. Community Advisors/Coordinators work as members of a hall, department, and University staff team.  Primarily supervised by a Residence Life Hall Director or their designee, the majority of the Community Advisor/Coordinator’s responsibilities occur within their assigned residence hall. However, additional department and University responsibilities may be assigned as needed.  Successful candidates will demonstrate that they have the ability to: work as a member of a staff, department, and University team; provide appropriate feedback to the department and institution; establish, follow, and understand the implications of inconsistency among team decisions; and contribute appropriately to shared responsibilities.

 

Community Coordinators provide leadership for an undergraduate residence hall floor community of primarily first and second year students.

 

Community Advisors work individually and as members of a staff team to support upper class students living in suites and apartments.

 

The Senior Community Coordinator/Advisor is an additional staff leadership position in addition to employment as a Community Coordinator or Advisor. Up to one SC/SA will be hired for each residence hall, suite, or apartment. The SA is a returning staff member selected through an application and interview to assist in providing leadership for the Community Coordinator/Advisor staff. The SC/SA must be able to demonstrate an ability to provide leadership for peers and management for several residence hall projects.

Community Advisor/Coordinator Qualifications

(additional to Student Employment Qualifications)

         Completion of 2 Reference Request forms.

         Lived a minimum of 1 semester on campus at SCSU.

         Undergraduate students must have a 2.3 GPA.

         Graduate students must have a 2.7 GPA.

 

Community Coordinator Applicants-

         Undergraduate students must have a minimum of 12 SCSU credits at the time of application and 24 credits at the time of employment.

         Graduate Students must have a minimum of 6 SCSU graduate credits at the time of application or 12 SCSU undergraduate credits.

 

Community Advisor Applicants-

         Undergraduate students must have a minimum of 36 SCSU credits at the time of application and 48 credits at the time of employment.

         Graduate Students must have a minimum of 6 SCSU graduate credits at the time of application or 12 SCSU undergraduate credits.

 

Senior Community Advisor Applicants-

         Must have been employed as a Community Advisor/Coordinator by the Office of Residence Life for a minimum of 3 semesters at the time of application.
