HATE INCIDENTS IN CONNECTICUT IN 2000

Bridgeport, Sept. 7, 2000: A black youth was charged with conspiracy to commit a hate crime after he allegedly assaulted an Asian youth in June.

Coventry, April 9, 2000: Robert Gouin, 17, was charged with breach of peace, second-degree harassment and ridicule on account of race as a result of a January web site posting that contained a racial slur and was racially motivated toward a black male.

Durham, May 15, 2000: Literature from the International Keystone Knights of the Ku Klux Klan was left at several residences.

East Haven, Oct. 25, 2000:Racist and anti-Semitic graffiti was discovered outside a local high school that was celebrating Diversity Day.

East Haven, Oct. 31, 2000Shaun Swanson, 18, was charged with criminal mischief, intimidation based on bigotry or bias and desecration of property for allegedly scrawling anti-Semitic graffiti and swastikas at a local high school.

Manchester o July 6, 2000:
Anti-Semitic and racist markings were spray-painted on an elementary school.

Milford, March 10, 2000:
Pamphlets from the neo-Nazi National Alliance were left in mailboxes.

Milford, Oct. 18, 2000:
Kenneth Papcun, 37, was charged with second-degree criminal mischief and intimidation based on bias for allegedly antagonizing strangers on the street whom he believed to be Hispanic.

Norwalk, Oct. 27, 2000:
Swastikas and the words "White Power" were spray-painted on the windows and hallways of an apartment building.

Norwich, July 31, 2000: A swastika and the phrase "Jews suck" were scrawled on a synagogue.

Norwich, Sept. 9, 2000: Anti-Semitic symbols, messages and black swastikas were spray-painted on a street.

Wallingford, Jan. 12, 2000: Three members of the Invisible Empire Knights of the Ku Klux Klan marched.

Weston, Feb. 10, 2000: Allen Jay Lorenz, 56, who is Jewish, was charged with obstructing persons in the free exercise of their religious beliefs for allegedly dumping, on the lawn of a synagogue, medical waste in a container marked with anti-Semitic messages.
