WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH EVENTS, 2002

The Clearing--Directed by Sheila Hickey Garvey
Lyman Center for the Performing Arts
"The Clearing," by Helen Edmunson, is a historically based drama that documents the effects of Oliver Cromwell's incursion of Ireland between 1649 and 1655. Cromwell's solution to what became known in England as "the Irish Question" was simple: "take this land, eradicate their culture and sell them." Following the March 9th peformance, Dr. Sheila Garvey and members of the SCSU Women's Studies Program will discuss the play's female characters and the impact of the historical events on the lives of women. This will be the first meeting of IOTA, IOTA, IOTA, SCSU Women's Studies Honor Society. Membership requirements are that you have a strong interest in women's studies, have at least 6 credits/hours of women's studies classes, be a women's studies undergrad minor, grad student, or alumnae, and have a GPA of 3.0. Interpersonal, Domestic, and Dating Violence: Legal, Counseling, and University Perspectives-A Round Table Discussion
11:00am - 12:30 pm, followed by lunch table discussions @ Connecticut Hall Special Dining Room
A panel of experts from the fields of law, marriage and family therapy, and university affairs will focus on the issue of the increase in violence in interpersonal relationships, especially among the current generation of students, and discuss the appropriate responses of a university community. Members of the Connecticut Permanent Commission on the Status of Women will meet with WMS graduate and undergraduate students to offer advice, mentorship, and networking opportunities for women wishing to enter state politics on a variety of levels and functions. The National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, Delta Phi Epsilon, and the SCSU Women's Center will sponsor an educational outreach program for sufferers of eating disorders to promote a positive body image, encourage healthy lifestyles and create awareness of the devastating impact of eating disorders on our youth.
