PLEASE NOTE:
Effective July 1, 2010, Connecticut law requires all students in teacher/educator certification programs to undergo state and national criminal history background checks before participating in school-based field experiences. The procedures for obtaining the background checks and the length of time they are valid will be established by the State Department of Education and cannot be altered. You will be responsible for the cost of the background check and will be provided with the necessary consent forms and other documents needed to conduct it. As part of the background check, you will need to be fingerprinted. If you fail to pass the background check, you may be unable to complete your chosen degree program at Southern Connecticut State University. The University will not be responsible for your inability to complete your chosen degree program.
The application for student teaching can be downloaded here and completed. One copy goes to the Student Teaching office along with 3 copies of the Personal Data Form. A copy of the application to student teach goes to the appropriate department coordinator (listed above). The deadline to submit material to the Student Teaching office and the department coordinator is March 1st for those students planning to student teach in a fall semester and October 1st for those planning to student teach in a spring semester. You must meet with the department coordinator, who will determine if you are eligible to student teach and who will then submit a list of possible placements to the Director of Student Teaching.
All Secondary Education students are required to attend an important informational meeting the semester prior to student teaching. There are usually two meeting dates designated at the beginning of each semester for this purpose. There are notices sent to the departments and signs posted around campus to inform students when the meeting has been scheduled. There is also information posted at least a month before the meeting on the Student Teaching bulletin board in Davis Hall.
Students may also submit an Application for Certification (ED 170A-Initial Educator Certificate) to the Director of Student Teaching approximately two months before they end their last semester of study. Proof of passing the Praxis II exam must be on file and recorded on the student's transcript; all grades must be finalized on the student's transcript and posted (all undergraduates must hold a Bachelor's degree, and an Master's for the Counseling and School Psychology program) before the certification application can be processed.
At the conclusion of Student Teaching, the revised final student teaching evaluation form must be completed and signed by the cooperating teacher, university supervisor and the student teacher.
The application for certification may be obtained at the Connecticut State Department of Education under Certification.
