Cohort Model

students working togetherSouthern's Ed.D. program follows a cohort model, in which up to 25 students are admitted to pursue courses concurrently.

Students take most classes with their cohort during the first two years of the program, with the exception of two to three electives which they may take with half or part of their cohort in the end of the second year. This model assists faculty in preparing an effective program of study by scaffolding learning throughout the courses, and provides immeasurable support to the students as they create networks with their peer-colleagues for doctoral study and life beyond Southern.

At the end of the second year, and after students pass the comprehensive examination, they continue their program of study on an individual track. Completion of the dissertation and final program requirements occur at an individual pace under the supervision of the student's advisor.
