Sixth Year Program for Intermediate Administrators
All students are encouraged to enroll in the Sixth Year Program for Intermediate Administrators. However, it is recognized that because of extenuating circumstances such as job preparation, timeliness, and prior graduate preparation, or some other valid reason, students may wish to complete the 21-credit portion that leads to certification. In such cases, the program of studies must include: EDL 680, EDL 681, EDL 682, EDL 683, EDL 684, EDL 685, and EDL 688 (the internship/field experience). In the event that the student has not yet satisfied the state's requirement for a special education course, then it would be necessary to include one in the program of study.
It is to be noted that all students are ultimately required by the State Department of Education to complete 30 credits beyond the master's degree within a specified number of years if they are to convert their initial certificate to the professional level after they have functioned in an administrative or supervisory capacity.
The State Department of Education established on July 1, 1998, that all candidates for the Initial Intermediate Administrator Certificate must demonstrate proof of their technology literacy before they are recommended for certification. This may be done through coursework or the completion of a portfolio as outlined in departmental policy.
Program Requirements
Once matriculated, students are required to maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.2. Failure to maintain an adequate 3.2 overall GPA may result in the student being placed on academic probation or being removed from the program.

Successful completion of the Connecticut Administrators Test (during the Internship requirement) is required. See also certification requirements for special education and technology.
Admitted matriculating students have six years in which to complete their planned program of study, including the field experience (internship) and seminar components. It is anticipated that the planned program of study leading to a Sixth Year Professional Diploma will require two to three years of intensive work on the part of the student. Those students requiring an extension of time beyond the six years may apply for an extension through the department's Committee on Standards and Appeals. Extensions may be granted based upon extenuating circumstances as presented by the student. Any course(s) older than six years must be retaken or revalidated in order to be considered for certification. Requests for revalidations must be submitted in writing to the Committee on Standards and Appeals. Students who do not complete their programs within the specified time limit or who fail to receive an extension must reapply to the graduate school and to the Department of Educational Leadership and, as a result, be required to meet current program requirements.
