Six standards of the School of education:

Students seeking to enter any undergraduate teacher education program are responsible for first completing the University Requirements. These are program-specific, so be sure to consult your program advisor or the undergraduate course catalog.

To satisfy the requirements of the School of Education, students must also complete five other standards:

Passing (or waiving) the Praxis I exam in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics
Minimum 2.7 QPR in all undergraduate courses
Submission of essay demonstrating proficiency in English
Interview by a departmental admissions committee
Two letters of recommendation attesting to suitability as an educator (forms available in main office)

There are four degree programs in elementary education leading to the Connecticut Initial Educators Certificate:

Early Childhood, Nursery-Grade 3 (Nursery-K with special education certification and Grade 1-3 regular education certification).
Elementary, Grade 1-6
Elementary and Special Education, Kindergarten-Grade 6 (K-6 regular education certification and K-12 special education certification).
Bilingual Elementary Education

Students who wish to become certified in one of these four areas must also choose a second major in an academic area outside of the School of Education. This means that such students will have two majors, and will graduate with a degree in both areas of study. Many Education majors choose a second major in psychology, or in a secondary subject such as literature, science, mathematics, history, or art.
