Endorsement Courses

EDM 510 Emergency, Disaster, & Catastrophe Management Concepts lll
EDM 510 is the endorsement course for the emergency management endorsement within the Emergency & Disaster Management certificate.  This course will cover specific issues related to public-sector emergency management at the federal, state, and local levels.  Focus will be given to how emergency management organizations fit within the context of public administration.  3 Credits.

EDM 517 Contemporary Topics in Emergency, Disaster, & Catastrophe Management
EDM 517 is the endorsement course for the Business Continuity, School Crisis Management, Public Health Preparedness, Hospital Emergency Management, Critical Infrastructure Assessment, and Exercise Design & Evaluation endorsement within the Emergency & Disaster Management certificate..  This course will vary by semester depending on student demands.  The student's graduate certificate will have their initial endorsement and all subsequent endorsements printed on the graduate certificate.  3 Credits.

Rotating topics (based on student demand) in EDM 517 will include:

Business Continuity is the endorsement course for the business continuity endorsement.  This course is designed to give students an overview of the business continuity planning (BCP) process, which focuses on strategies to minimize the risk of disruptions to the normal business process.  It is the internal (non-public) version of emergency management and includes both private sector business continuity and public sector continuity of operations planning, following the Disaster Recovery Institute's Professional Practices structure.

School Crisis Management is the endorsement course for the school crisis endorsement.  This course will cover specific issues related to emergency management & crisis planning for educational (pre-k, K-12, and university) institutions, including planning, mitigation, response, and recovery from natural events, man-made events, and violence.  We will have a specific focus on Columbine & Virginia Tech shootings as well as the East Coldenham collapse that killed almost a dozen school-aged children in Orange County, NY.

Public Health Preparedness is the endorsement course for the public health preparedness endorsement.  This course will cover specific issues related to public health emergency preparedness, including disaster surveillance, hazard assessment, disaster environmental health, disaster mental health, bioterrorism, and public health-related issues in recovery & reconstruction.

Hospital Emergency Management is the endorsement course for the hospital emergency management endorsement.  This course will cover specific issues related to both internal preparedness of hospitals and preparedness of hospitals to meet external demands.  This course will cover operating within the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) standards, and the managing requirements of the Department of Health & Human Services Hospital Preparedness Program.

Critical Infrastructure Assessment is the endorsement course for the critical infrastructure endorsement.  This course will cover issues related to assessing critical infrastructure utilizing methodology designed by the Department of Defense, Department of General Services, and Veteran's Administration.  This course will have a hands-on assessment component of a designated critical infrastructure facility from which students will develop and complete a report of recommendations.

Exercise Design & Evaluation is the endorsement course for the exercise design & evaluation endorsement.  This course will cover design, management & evaluation of exercise programs throughout the exercise lifecycle, utilizing the Homeland Security Exercise & Evaluation Program methodology, which is a requirement for all federal terrorism grant programs. Students will be able to manipulate concepts through design and implementation of their own tabletop exercises and will have the chance to participate in real external exercises as controllers or evaluators.
