Brief Description of Duties/Responsibilities: The Communication Department at Southern Connecticut State University seeks a full-time, tenure track Assistant Professor to teach undergraduate courses in advertising, communication and technology, copywriting, campaigns, and integrated marketing communication, as well as develop specialized courses in the application of new/social media. The successful candidate will share department values and demonstrate an active commitment to a project-focused approach to teaching, a productive plan of research/creative activity, department and university service, an undergraduate liberal arts education at an intentionally diverse campus, academic advising, assessment/development of the Advertising & Promotions curriculum and ongoing participation in professional development. Position begins August 2012.


Required Qualifications
- Earned Ph.D or M.F.A. in Advertising, Mass Communication or a closely related discipline. ABD's are encouraged to apply but must have completed degree by time of hire. An ideal candidate will have a history of professional experience, particularly in the areas of creative application, new media, social media and/or public relations.

Preferred Qualifications
Extensive professional experience in the advertising industry is preferred. A record of college-level teaching experience, especially in the areas of design and technology is preferred, with a strong commitment to teaching undergraduate students. Familiarity with Mac OS and Adobe Creative Suite software is also preferred.


Department
The Communication Department, housed in the School of Arts and Sciences, offers the B.S. Degree in Communication. With approximately 400 majors, the department specializes in four distinct areas of the discipline: Advertising & Promotions, Interpersonal and Relational Communication, Organizational Communication and Video Production. The department is committed to innovative teaching strategies, to scholarship, and to creative activity that provides greater understanding and appreciation of evolving work processes, responsible citizenship, sensitivity toward others, and integration of technology in everyday experiences. The department helps its students develop competencies in four key areas: understanding of the discipline; creative and critical thinking; performance-based skills; and an awareness of personal and professional identity in a complex and diverse culture.
