The Elementary Education Department in the School of Education at Southern Connecticut State University seeks a dynamic, experienced leader to join our faculty as Department Chairperson. This is a tenure track position. The assignment as Chairperson is for three years and is renewable by department faculty election.
Job description: A department chairperson is in the unique position of functioning simultaneously as a scholar, teacher, administrator, and he/she should have the best talents of each. The Chairperson will advocate for the Department's interests within the School of Education, the University, and the community at large. The chairperson will manage the day to day departmental operations, and ensure that departmental responsibilities are effectively met, including requirements related to admissions, faculty evaluation, personnel, curriculum, student teaching, student evaluation and student advisement. Chairperson responsibilities also include management of faculty assignments, scheduling, budgeting, institutional assessment, and university reporting. Ideally, the Chairperson's leadership style will promote the development of a shared vision for departmental goals, reflect our tradition of collaborative decision making, and foster a sense of community.
Required qualifications:
• Earned doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction, Literacy, Science Education, or Early Childhood Education.
• Three years of successful leadership experience, preferably in higher education.
• Higher education teaching experience appropriate to rank.
• Scholarly achievement appropriate to the rank.
Preferred qualifications:
• Three years of full time teaching experience in P-6 education or related area.
• Experience working with professional development schools and public school.
• A successful record of accreditation and strategic planning experience in a leadership role.
