POSITION TITLE: Server Administrator (Windows)

POSITION SUMMARY
This position is responsible for a variety of Microsoft Windows server administration tasks, including system architecture, hardware specification, software and hardware installation, as well as maintenance and upgrades. This position will also provide technical support for a variety of applications, and will include programming and scripting tasks, as needed.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Assists in the installation and maintenance of Windows servers. This includes hardware setup, software installation/configuration and the day-to-day administration (performance tuning, monitoring, troubleshooting, etc).
2. Manages, installs, configures and updates software for internet/intranet services, including web services, email services, collaboration tools, file and backup services on multiple hardware and software protocols.
3. Researches and investigates new hardware, software and management tools relating to application and systems.
4. Assists in installation and configuration of firewalls, proxy servers and other tools to insure security and privacy.
5. Assists in the development and hosting of server-based computer applications.
6. Designs and develops automated procedures using a variety of scripting and programming languages. Tests and documents these procedures.
7. Documents campus internet and intranet services, including technical documentation and user manuals.
8. Produces statistical reports regarding system usage.
9. Develops standard operating procedures (backup/recovery, error logging, account creation, file/print services, system alerts, etc.) and trains staff in the implementation of these procedures.
10. Performs other duties and responsibilities related to those enumerated above which do not alter the basic responsibility of the position.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree from a fully-accredited university is required. Degree in Computer Science, Math or a related area is preferred. Five years of professional experience in a client server environment is required. Demonstrated expertise with family of MS Windows Operating Systems, including Win 2003, Win 2008, XP, Vista and Windows 7 is required, as is strong experience with installation, configuration and administration of MS SQL Server. Ability to write and debug scripts using common scripting languages like Power Shell or Active State Perl is required. Experience with MS Exchange and VMWare is strongly preferred. Familiarity with Unix-based operating systems, such as Linux is a plus. Experience with managing small to medium projects including needs analysis, planning, testing, and implementation is desirable.
The candidate should possess strong oral and written communication skills, should be able to provide examples of clear written documentation, and should understand and have a familiarity with working within formal service management and project management frameworks. A successful candidate will also demonstrate the desire and ability to learn new skills quickly and a commitment to excellence in a service-oriented environment. An equivalent combination of experience and credentials may also be considered.
