POSITION TITLE:            Sustainability Coordinator

POSITION TYPE:    This is a part-time, 25-hour position.

RANK:                    Administrator II

SUPERVISOR'S TITLE:
    Assoc. VP for Capital Budgeting & Facility Operations

POSITION SUMMARY: 

The Sustainability Coordinator will develop, coordinate, and implement programs to advance Sustainability at Southern Connecticut State University in accordance with the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, SCSU's institutional goals for Sustainability outlined and described in the Climate Action Plan, and strategic goals identified by the Sustainable Climate Committee.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Assists the Executive Vice President of Finance and Administration, the Associate Vice President of Capital Budget and Facilities, and the Sustainable Climate Committee in defining short term and long range goals including but not limited to greenhouse gas emission reduction, and energy and resource conservation/ efficiency.

Implements and oversees performance metrics including greenhouse gas inventories, energy performance trends, benefit/ cost analysis, and other tools to measure and evaluate progress in Sustainability.  Creates a series of benchmarks for an annual Sustainability Report.

Collaborates with appropriate departments and groups including faculty, staff, and students, community and professional organizations to develop, plan, and coordinate initiatives and projects to advance Sustainability on campus, in the greater New Haven community, and as part of regional and national coalitions in Higher Education.

Teaches and assists in coordinating the Environmental Learning Community in the First Year Experience program, and aids and facilitates in the development of Sustainability in academic research and curriculum.

Represents SCSU's sustainability programs to the public, attending regional and national conferences as appropriate. Serves as liason with the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) and other professional organizations in Sustainability.

Represents and disseminates SCSU's sustainability programs within the university community, maintaining communication with offices, departments, and committees to reach university Sustainability objectives. Collaborate with Public Affairs to develop materials in support of sustainability projects and initiatives.

Researches and maintains working knowledge of best practices in Sustainability at peer institutions, and up-to-date information regarding the development of the green economy and employment opportunity, and collaborate on projects in regional and national consortia.

Collaborates with SPAR and the Office of Institutional Development to research up-to-date opportunities for funding Sustainability by public entities and private foundations in combination with developing a strategic plan to attain funding.

Performs other duties related to those enumerated above which do not alter the basic level of responsibility of the position.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Bachelors degree required preferably in the environmental field and two years experience in establishing, promoting, teaching, and coordinating sustainability programs in a public or private institution of higher learning.  Strong interpersonal skills to provide excellent customer service and to solve problems individually or in a team setting.  Ability to work with a diverse staff and to communicate effectively with faculty, staff and students.  Demonstrated commitment to improving environmental quality.  These qualifications may be waived for individuals with appropriate alternate experience.
