In addition to this application for admission to the Graduate English Degree Program or Certification, candidates must also complete an application for admission to the School of Graduate Studies and have original transcripts mailed directly to the Office of Graduate Studies. Copies of this application form are available from the Office of Graduate Studies. Contact the Graduate Office at (203) 392-5240 to have a copy of the application form sent to you. Note: Please do not send your application fee, your original transcripts or your School of Graduate Studies application to the Department of English

 What you must submit to the Department of English Graduate Admissions Committee 

  • This completed form; 

  • A typed 500-word statement of purpose in which you explain why you are interested in pursuing graduate studies in English and/or secondary education certification (you may wish to make reference to academic, professional, and/or personal interests as well as future goals);

  • A sample of your academic or professional non-fiction prose (minimum length: 4-5 pages or 1000-1250 words);

  • Two letters of recommendation (the letters of recommendation should be mailed directly to you in sealed envelopes with the signature of the recommender across the flap of the envelope). 

Please mail all of these application materials in a single envelope directly to the address below. The envelope should include this application form, your statement of purpose, your writing sample, and your two letters of recommendation:
